# Playoff picture for Division II girls basketball

The Lebanon and Portsmouth high school girls basketball teams haven't played each other since the 2013 season.

That year, the teams faced off in the Division II championship game - they're only meeting of that season - with Lebanon completing an undefeated season with a title.

Could the Clippers and the Raiders be headed for another meeting? They're in the same spots now in the standings as they were on that day - No. 1 and No. 2 in the division.

While there's a lot left to be determined, the postseason is a little more than five weeks away.

### Top four

- Portsmouth (8-0)
- Lebanon (7-0)
- Merrimack Valley (7-1)
- Souhegan (7-1)

All four were undefeated going into Tuesday's action, but Portsmouth handed Souhegan its first loss and Merrimack Valley fell at Pembroke.

It was the first of a tough four-game stretch for the Sabers, as they host Hollis Brookline on Friday, followed by road games against Windham and Lebanon.

Aside from that game between Souhegan and Lebanon on Jan. 29, none of these four teams play each other the rest of the way, meaning some teams from below are going to have to step up and work their way into the top four.

### Next four

- Hollis Brookline (6-3)
- Pembroke (6-3)
- Goffstown (5-3)
- Bishop Brady (4-3)

Hollis Brookline is one of the hottest teams in the division, having won five in a row after a 1-3 start. The Cavaliers get two big test in their next two, as they play at Souhegan on Friday and host Lebanon on Tuesday.

Pembroke is also on a streak of its own, having won three in a row, including handing Merrimack Valley its first loss on Tuesday. After a game at Timberlane on Friday, the Spartans face Bishop Brady and Goffstown in back-to-back games.

### The middle

- Hanover (4-3)
- Coe-Brown (4-4)
- Manchester West (4-5)
- Oyster River (4-5)
- Milford (3-5)
- Timberlane (3-5)

Hanover's three losses have been to Lebanon (twice) and Souhegan, and the Marauders play just four of their final 11 games against teams above them in the standings.

Manchester West has turned its season around of late, winning four of its last six, which started with a 10-point win over Goffstown. The remaining schedule is favorable for West, with only three of its final nine games against teams that currently have a winning record.

### Lower third

- John Stark (2-6)
- Kingswood (2-6)
- Windham (2-6)
- Plymouth (2-7)
- St. Thomas (2-7)
- Kennett (1-7)
- ConVal (0-6)

As of Thursday, John Stark, Kingswood and Windham were tied for 15th in the division, meaning one of the three would miss the postseason if it started now.

The Generals looked like they were in for a solid season with early wins over Hollis Brookline and Oyster River, but since the start of 2016, John Stark has gone in the other direction.

Seven of Windham's eight games have been decided by eight points or less, and the Jagaurs have lost three by a combined 12 points.
