# Playoff picture for Division II boys basketball

The Division II boys basketball playoffs begin in under seven weeks, and will the teams at the top of the standings appear to be solidifying their position, the middle of the pack is large and unsettled.

There are 10 teams that go into the weekend separated by two losses or fewer. A bad week could drop a team from a top eight spot in the standings to the very bottom, or a good week could propel someone toward the top.

### The top

- Portsmouth (7-0)
- Milford (6-0)
- Lebanon (5-0)
- Bishop Brady (5-1)
- Manchester West (5-1)

Four of these five teams were here a year ago, and were expected to be among the top teams again this season. Milford is crashing the party, and could further solidify its spot with a good showing on Friday at Portsmouth.

Offense is what has been leading each of these five teams this season. Only four times have these five teams been held to fewer than 50 points, with Milford and Lebanon eclipsing that total in every game this year.

Lebanon has averaged 65 points per game and has yet to give up more than 41 points. The Raiders closest game was a 21-point win over Hanover, the second of two games for those teams this season.

Portsmouth has been even better on offense, with the exception of a 48-46 win over West in the season opener, and Tuesday's 56-31 win over Souhegan, where the Sabers tried to slow the game down. In the other five wins, the Clippers have averaged 80.8 points per game.

Milford's offense has been solid this season as well, as the Spartans average 63.7 points a game, and they've been able to get the job done on defense as well.

West isn't far behind, putting up 62.5 points per game, while Bishop Brady averaged 66.4 points in its five wins; the Giants scored just 45 in a loss to West last Friday.

### The middle

- Kennett (5-2)
- Coe-Brown (4-2)
- Souhegan (4-2)
- Hollis Brookline (3-3)
- Oyster River (3-3)
- Timberlane (3-3)
- Plymouth (3-4)
- Goffstown (3-4)
- John Stark (3-4)
- Windham (3-4)

Some of these teams have been competitive against the top five teams, but came up a little short. Kennett's only losses have been to Portsmouth and Milford, although both were by an average of 37.5 points.

Same with Souhegan, although the Sabers kept things a little closer against both. Hollis Brookline played Milford tough the second time around, and hung with West for most of an 11-point loss.

Coe-Brown's next four games could make or break its season, as it host Kennett on Friday before heading to Portsmouth and Milford next week. That's followed by a home game against the Clippers on Feb. 2.

### The bottom

- St. Thomas (2-6)
- ConVal (1-5)
- Hanover (0-5)
- Merrimack Valley (0-6)
- Kingswood (0-7)

As it currently stands, St. Thomas would be the 16th seed if the tournament started Thursday, but it might Hanover that eventually moved up to that spot.

The Marauders have played a tough schedule so far, as their opponents are a combined 25-3\. The next four games are against teams that have gone 7-19 this year.
