Gary Karibian knew he had a talented group coming back this season for the Campbell High School girls soccer team.

But if the Cougars were going to have the kind of year they wanted, the coach realized he had to find a way to flip a switch within his players.

Before the season started, Karibian called his players together and reminded them of what they were playing for by being a Cougar.

"We talked about the name on the front of the jersey," he said. "We talked about playing for Campbell, about playing at the highest level in Litchfield. Girls look up to you and you're playing for your school, your parents, yourselves. It means something when you put on that jersey and I'm not sure we had that."

So far, Karibian's pep talk has worked, as Campbell has started the season 3-0 in Division III, and has yet to allow a goal, outscoring its first three opponents 7-0.

That includes the season opener, where the Cougars shut out Conant, which has seven goals in its other two games, and a shutout of Derryfield, which has one of the highest scoring players in state girls soccer history in Gabi Brummett.

"We're playing much more as a team," Karibian said. "It wasn't an individualistic effort and that's what we need out of this season. That's what we’ve had problems with over the last two seasons, not playing as a team and not coming out with energy. We're coming out with a lot more energy."

And that's helped Campbell be one of four unbeaten teams left in the division.

"I think we're much more of a united team than we have been for the past two seasons," Karibian said. "We had great kids and great players over the last two seasons, but we lacked energy. We talked about that constantly. This year, we've come out and worked hard and fought hard with a lot of excitement."

The Cougars go for their fourth win of the season Tuesday when they host Prospect Mountain.

### Moving up

Two big changes in the girls soccer landscape this season was the move of Bow up to Division II and Derryfield up to Division III.

The Falcons had won the last three D3 titles in a row, and four of the last five, reaching the title game in the last six straight years. In the last two seasons, Bow was 39-1 against division opponents, and this year, the Falcons are off to a 2-1 start after falling to Hanover, the defending D2 champ.

Derryfield had won the last two D4 titles, going 37-3 over that stretch, but like Bow, the Cougars suffered their first loss of the season early this year. The winning percentage of the teams Derryfield will play this year is .550, but six of those teams went a combined 71-24-1 last year.

Bow's opponents for the year had a win percentage of .507, and like Derryfield, the Falcons have a stretch of the top teams from last season on their schedule. Bow plays six games against teams that went 77-16-2 last year.

### Plenty of offense

It's been a different kind of season for St. Thomas, which has gotten off to a 2-1 start in D2 this year.

The Saints, who struggled to score goals while going 4-10-2 a year ago, have found the back of the net 15 times so far this season for an average of five goals a game.

Last year, St. Thomas scored 16 goals all season. The Saints could add to that total on Tuesday, as they'll host Manchester West, which has allowed 16 goals in three games this season.
