NASHUA - There were a number of reasons the Pinkerton Academy girls lacrosse team started out slow in Wednesday's game against Nashua South.

Coming off a down-to-the-wire win over Bedford to open the season, maybe the Astros were still thinking about that game. Or maybe on a windy, chilly day during the first week of the season, they just were still working off some of the rust.

But whatever the reason, Pinkerton coach Rob Daziel wasn't happy about it, and late in the first half, he called a timeout to tell the Astros that.

Whatever the coach said worked, as Pinkerton scored four goals in the final 5:14 of the half and held South to just one in the second half on the way to a 13-3 win over the Panthers at Stellos Stadium.

Lauren Lisauskas and Kiley Davis each had three goals and an assist and Madison Daziel also had three goals to lead the Astros (2-0), while Dani Martineau made four saves, none bigger than one when the Panthers were a man-up in the first half and trailed by just one.

"Dani made a big save," Rob Daziel said. "We started out a little rough, but then we pulled it together and started playing smarter out there. We called a timeout and talked about the pace of the game. We weren’t moving quickly, we weren’t pressuring on defense and we weren’t moving on offense. We got better as the game went on, and that’s all I asked for."

Lilly Auger added two goals for Pinkerton and Meg Michaud and Hailey Peredna chipped in with a goal apiece while Madison Peredna recorded an assist.

South (0-1) got all three of its goals from Kirsten McIntire, who left midway through the second half with a knee injury but was walking around after the game. Abby Rowe made eight saves for the Panthers, who were able to keep the game close for most of the first half by maintaining possession for long stretches.

"I was pleased with the fact that we were able to hold on to the ball offensively and not feel pressured and get a bad shot off," South coach Ciki McIntire said. "We started off strong. It was a one- or two-goal game there for a time, and then we just had a lull. The wheels came off the bus for a little bit, but we were able to get it back together. I’m really proud of the fact that they kept fighting."

Kirsten McIntire's second goal made it a 3-2 lead for Pinkerton with 10:06 left in the first half, and moments later, Lisauskas got a yellow card, giving South an advantage for two minutes. The Panthers worked the ball around for a good look, but Martineau made the save and the Astros took it down to the other end.

But despite having the ball for an extended possession, Pinkerton wasn't getting it like, and Daziel took a timeout with 5:45 left in the half. Michaud scored on a free position right after the timeout, starting the Astros on a 4-0 run to end the half that swung momentum.

In the second half, Pinkerton's defense limited South to just three shots and forced seven turnovers.

"We forced some turnovers in our ride and the defense played well," Daziel said. "Dani made some saves. I’m happy so far with the way our defense is playing. We’ve got some athletes back there and they’re responding. Some of our defenders would be midfielders on other teams around the state, they’re that good athletically."

South returns to action Friday when it heads to Bedford while Pinkerton will host Portsmouth on Saturday.
