It was senior night, and a larger number of fans were allowed to attend the Pinkerton Academy boys lacrosse team's game against its biggest rival. Drouin gave the friends and family of the Astros plenty to cheer about, as he scored three goals in the game's first three-plus minutes, and Pinkerton kept Londonderry at a distance the entire way to take a 16-7 win. The Pinkerton senior finished with five goals and two assists, as did fellow senior Mason Barbone, while Joey Gallo had two goals and an assist. Riley Spellman and Michael Uber added a goal and an assist apiece and Ryan Lynch and Colby Gagnon also scored. "It was nice to get off to that start," Drouin said. "I think we were able to start off that well because we were finally able to get some fans back in the stands. The energy in the stadium is something I’ve missed. Coming out strong is huge and we were able to hold on to that lead." Liam Prescott also picked up an assist, Cole Franks was 17 of 25 on faceoffs and Curtis Michaud made eight saves, including a couple early that helped Pinkerton (11-4) keep Londonderry off the board in the first quarter. "Curtis had a great day," Pinkerton coach Steve Gaudreau said. "He has come on late and been pretty consistent. It’s been a good problem for us to have, as far as having a couple of guys in the mix. They have athletes and they’re a tough team in transition. They can get guys free and he was there, stepping up when he needed to." Jack Kester led the Lancers (8-5) with four goals while Hunter Smith had two and Aidan Dennis added one. Londonderry took a quick shot on each of its first three possessions, with Pinkerton getting the ball back and scoring at the other end. Drouin made it 3-0 with his third goal with 8:57 left in the opening quarter and Barbone added another with 6:59 to go to make it 4-0. Kester got the Lancers on the board three minutes into the second quarter, but Barbone scored two goals in 21 seconds to give the Astros a 6-1 lead. Smith got Londonderry back within four goals, but Uber made it 7-2 with 2:57 left in the half and Drouin put Pinkerton up six goals with just three seconds remaining. "We go on these runs and then I think we get so amped up, we have to understand consistency," Gaudreau said. "They clearly made adjustments. We put pressure on them early." Pinkerton found more of that consistency in the second half, as the Astros were able to draw out possessions when they weren't scoring to keep Londonderry from building any momentum. "Lacrosse is a game of runs usually," Drouin said. "If we can make good runs and then stop them, I mean they’re going to bury one here and there, but if we can continue to stop them when they get momentum going, I think we’ll be in good shape." The Lancers cut the lead to five goals on three occasions in the third, including 10-5 on a goal by Dennis with 1:10 left in the quarter. But Gallo scored with 18.1 seconds left to make it 11-5 heading into the fourth, and Barbone tacked on another goal 1:16 into the frame. "It’s been the missing part to our game," Gaudreau said. "We have the ability to go on runs. I think our transition game, we’re really making an emphasis on running a slow-break offense and getting early looks. That least piece for us is, and I think you saw it in the second half, we had a couple of really long possessions and we’re getting looks." The teams will meet again at 5 p.m. Thursday at Londonderry.
