The Astros, behind senior Brett Dattilo, dominated on faceoffs against Bishop Guertin, and rallied twice in the second half to beat the Cardinals 15-13 in a Division I battle of unbeatens at Stellos Stadium. "I watched a dominating performance at faceoffs, which is something I don't think we've ever really had against BG," O'Reilly said. "It gave us control of the ball the whole game and in a close game like this, that was everything. "Obviously, many, many kids stepped up and played well. Alex (Sturgess) made some big saves but I can't say enough about Brett Dattilo's game and the dominating faceoff performance." Sturgess stopped 11 shots, including a save on Charlie O'Brien with under a minute to play that would have tied the game. Dattilo also had four goals while Ryan Auger had four goals - including what proved to be the game-winner with 1:54 left - and two assists and James Tulley had four goals and a helper. O'Brien led the Cardinals (10-1) with six goals while Nick Prunier (assist), Tim Hinrichs and John Bruno had two goals apiece. Colin Casey made nine saves, four of which came in the fourth quarter, but Bishop Guertin had trouble clearing the ball, which led to a handful of Pinkerton's goals. "When we had the ball we scored," Bishop Guertin coach Chris Cameron said. "We just gave up so many second chances. To lose the faceoffs and then to clear the ball at less than 50 percent, and be in a tie game with less than three minutes to go, I'd like our chances if we can clean those up. "We have to put ourselves in better spots and make them pay for press rides. I took some timeouts and out of the timeouts, we turned it over. That's a sign of a poorly coached team, and I'll clean that up. We have five or six weeks to clean that up and we’ll be better." Pinkerton got on the board first, scoring two goals in six seconds after Bishop Guertin's Doug Barker was called for a hit to the head and was locked-in for two minutes. But the Cardinals were able to win the ensuing faceoff and kill the rest of the penalty before putting together a run of their own. Bishop Guertin went on a 5-0 run, which included two man-up goals of its own, to take a three-goal lead with 6:02 left in the second quarter. Pinkerton answered quickly to make it a one-goal game just 51 seconds later, but the Cardinals came back with two goals of their own in 1:03 to go up 7-4\. The Astros again scored twice to make it a 7-6 game going into halftime, and then netted three of the first four goals of the third quarter to tie the game at 8 with 6:55 left in the third. And that's when the Cardinals started to struggle clearing the ball. Pinkerton took a 9-8 lead when a clear attempt by Casey bounced right to Tulley, who was able to beat the Cardinals goalie on a scramble back to the net. Bishop Guertin tied it at 9 moments later, but Auger gave Pinkerton the lead back when he scooped up a rebound and put it past Casey. "We rolled it up to 12-9 and I had to smile," O'Reilly said. "Nothing is safe against them, nothing." Hinrichs and O'Brien scored 32 seconds apart to get Bishop Guertin back within a goal just 40 seconds after the Astros took the three-goal lead, and Prunier tied it up less than a minute later. Bruno made it a 4-0 Cardinals' run with 7:32 left to put Bishop Guertin back on top 13-12. "They put three quick ones (in), off of bad groundballs by us," O'Reilly said. "We made some bad decisions as far as possession of the ball. Give them credit, their transition game was on (Monday). "They had two runs, the one in the first half, when they took the lead away from us, and the one after we pulled away 12-9\. We were able to withstand both of those." After Bishop Guertin took a timeout, the Cardinals turned it over, leading to a goal by Pinkerton's Nick Sturgess to tie the game with 5:45 left. With under two minutes to play, Jared Zeichik missed a groundball in the Bishop Guertin end that was scooped up by Chris Valentine, who found Auger alone in front of the goal for the game-winner with 1:54 remaining. "It's late in a tie game and we have a guy open for a groundball and we just miss it," Cameron said. "Those little things add up. Good, athletic teams will make you do that. It's not that we played poorly, they made that happen. We've got to get better." Tulley added an insurance goal after Alex Sturgess' save on O'Brien and Pinkerton won the final faceoff to wrapup the victory. Both teams are off for a few days, as Bishop Guertin plays at Salem on Thursday and Pinkerton travels to Exeter on Friday.
