BEDFORD - As a whole, the Pinkerton Academy boys lacrosse team didn't play its best game Monday night against Bedford.

Whatever the reasons, when the Astros needed a big play, someone was there to step up.

With the game tied at 7 going into the fourth quarter, Pinkerton got two goals in the first 42 seconds to retake the lead.

And when Bedford had a chance to tie the game in the closing seconds, goalie Alex Sturgess made a great save to keep Pinkerton in front and the Astros ran out the clock for a 9-8 win over the Bulldogs in a Division I game.

"All the credit goes to Bedford for bringing the game to us," Pinkerton coach Brian O'Reilly said. "I didn't think that we possessed the ball very well. I didn't think we did a very good job on the groundballs. We let up some goals that we don't normally let in. You put that all together, and you have this kind of a game."

It was a game where Pinkerton (13-0) got out in front early and took a 3-1 lead after one quarter, but could never get a run going to put Bedford (8-5) away. Part of that was the Astros own struggles and part of that was the Bulldogs defense, which forced 14 turnovers and limited Pinkerton to 22 shots.

"We fought all the way to the end of the game," Bedford coach Matt Guerard said. "We played 48 minutes of lacrosse, definitely not mistake free, but we played all the way to the end. As the game grew, we got more confidence in our offense and we started to buckle down defensively."

Pinkerton got four goals and three assists from Ryan Auger and Chad Teresky added a goal and two assists. Chris Valentine, Gennaro Marra, Owen McCormack and Nate Lalibertie each added a goal while Sturgess made 11 saves.

Brandon Howe had three goals and an assist to lead Bedford, while Kyle Fink had two goals and an assist and Stewart Kirkpatrick had a goal and two assists. Devin LaFrance (assist) and Austin Edwards also scored a goal apiece and Sean Tierney made six saves.

Pinkerton got out to a 5-2 lead in the second quarter, but Bedford's defense was able to keep the Astros off the board for almost nine minutes. Two goals by the Bulldogs late in the quarter made it a 5-4 game with 1:39 to go until halftime, and 18 seconds later, Pinkerton's Sam Goudreault received a two-minute locked-in penalty for a hit to the head.

But Bedford turned the ball over right after play resumed and Auger scored in transition to make it 6-4 with 1:01 left in the half. The Bulldogs got the goal back with 15.3 to go in the quarter, but any momentum from that didn't carry over to the second half.

After the penalty expired early in the third, Auger scored again to get Pinkerton's lead back to two goals. But a goal by Edwards with 7:14 left in the quarter got the lead back down to one, and with 14 seconds to go before the fourth, Fink scored to tie the game.

Any momentum that Bedford gained, Pinkerton squashed, as Laliberte won the faceoff and scored 12 seconds into the fourth to give the Astros the lead. The Pinkerton freshman won the next faceoff, too, and McCormack scored 30 seconds later to make it 9-7.

Fink made it a one-goal game against with 9:47 to play, but Pinkerton was able to control possession and work the clock. A turnover by the Astros with 2:07 to play gave Bedford a final chance, but Sturgess made the save on a shot by Fink with under 15 seconds to play.

"The last one, Alex was Alex," O'Reilly said. "Everybody has an off night. He made the save when it mattered because that one was tattooed for the corner."

Bedford did everything Guerard wanted on that possession, except score a goal.

"We made the best of it and we put the ball in the hands of our best players," he said. "Kyle made a run to the net, had an open shot, and he made a great save. There was nothing Kyle could have done. He put it in the right spot, the kid just made a great save on him."
