DERRY - Steve Gaudreau didn't have to say much to the Pinkerton Academy boys lacrosse team at halftime of Tuesday's game against St. John's High School.

The goose egg on the scoreboard said everything the Astros needed to hear.

After some time to regroup, Pinkerton opened the second half with the missing intensity Gaudreau wanted to see, and once the Astros got on the board, they steamrolled their way to a 10-5 win over the Pioneers in an out-of-state game in Derry.

Ryan Lynch scored less than a minute into the third quarter to start a 6-0 run that saw Pinkerton go up by three goals. Then, after St. John's, from Shrewsbury, Mass., got back within a goal, the Astros finished the game with a 4-0 run over the final six minutes to put the win away.

"I love when people think it’s my halftime speech," Gaudreau said. "At the end of the day, these guys understand they have to step up. We still didn’t execute as I would have liked (in the second half), but we were playing with more passion, more intent, more energy."

Lynch and Matt Feole led the way, as each had three goals and an assist, and they teamed up to score the first four goals of Pinkerton's third-quarter run. That turned a 3-0 halftime deficit into a one-goal that quickly turned to two after Cole Frank scored off the ensuing faceoff, just seven seconds later.

Joey Gallo also had a goal and an assist and Michael Uber and Matt Morrison also scored for the Astros (4-0, No. 3 in the NHHSSports Coaches Poll) and Cam Leeds added an assist.

Tyler LeBlanc made nine saves, six of which came in the first half to keep the game from getting out of hand, and two more came early in the fourth quarter to keep Pinkerton in front.

"He was our best player (Tuesday), and for us to get through that tough stretch early on and only be down three goals, it said a lot about Ty and our defense," Gaudreau said.

That day included a save in the fourth quarter where a St. John's player had a one-on-none breakaway, but LeBlanc came up with the stop.

"Throughout the whole game, whether I’m having a bad game or a great game, I just keep my mind blank," LeBlanc said. "I don’t count my saves, I don’t count the shots I’ve let in. I try not to look at the scoreboard, but I let that slip sometimes. I try to keep my mind completely blank. I don’t dwell on it."

Anthony Amandolare and Ryan Bouvier each had two goals for St. John's while Colin Bellard also scored and Aaron Ricketts made 12 saves.

Only three of those stops came in the first half for Ricketts, as Pinkerton not only didn't get on the board, but struggled to get anything going in the attacking end. With the way LeBlanc and the Astros defense were playing at the other end, the offense knew it had to step up.

"We had a big talk that we needed to come out explosive," Lynch said. "We knew coming in it was a big game, it was going to be a hard-fought game. (St. John’s) is a very good team. Really getting that momentum in and getting that goal, it was a big relief for us and we could just start going from there."

Opportunity presented itself early, as St. John's Trevor Potenti was called for a push with possession just 35 seconds into the half. Lynch capitalized, scoring 18 seconds later.

Frank, who was 16 of 17 on faceoffs, gave the Astros possession, and after Ricketts made a save, the Pioneers were unable to clear, setting up Feole's first goal with 9:16 to play in the quarter.

The senior added another score to tie the game, and after another push-with-possession call against St. John's, Lynch added another manup goal to make it 4-3\. The lead quickly grew after Frank came down with the faceoff and found the back of the net to make it 5-3 with 3:12 to go in the third.

"Cole was great right when we needed him," Gaudreau said. "They were doing about everything you could think of to jam him up, tie him up, by physical with him. We made the right adjustments and he did a tremendous job."

Gallo made it 6-3 with 2:01 to go until the fourth, but the Pioneers responded after that, getting two goals before the end of the quarter to make it 6-5\. St. John's had two great looks early in the fourth quarter to tie the game, but LeBlanc came up big in the moment to keep the Astros in front.

"It was a great feeling," LeBlanc said of bouncing back from the two goals allowed. "I’m watching us score and then all of a sudden, the ball is on this side. That is my bad."

Gaudreau called a timeout with 7:56 to play and Pinkerton still clinging to a 6-5 lead. Lynch ended the scoring drought to give the Astros a 7-5 lead with 5:38 to play and they were able to dominate possession over the final five minutes, putting in three more goals.

With road games against Exeter and Longmeadow (Mass.) on Thursday and Friday, respectively, getting a win over the Pioneers was a great way to start the week.

"These Mass. teams and Exeter are no joke, so starting the week off with a win is huge for us," LeBlanc said. "It’s absolutely huge and it’s going to give us so much confidence going into Thursday because it’s a huge game."
