NASHUA - Thomas Romick thinks shooting in basketball could be a little bit like hitting in baseball.

Once one guy gets hot, everybody's confidence gets a little higher, and the basket looks a whole lot bigger.

That seemed to be the case Friday for the Pinkerton Academy boys basketball team, as the Astros shot 48 percent from behind the 3-point line and blew past Nashua North for a 74-55 win in Division I action.

Romick led the way for Pinkerton (8-1) with 24 points, including four 3-pointers, while Brenna Morris also hit four 3s and scored 20 points. Matthew Rizzo chipped in with 10 points, six of which came on 3-pointers.

"We've practiced a lot of outside shots and we've been getting them down, so we stick with that," Romick said. "Me, Brennan and Rizzo were all shooting the ball really well. It was a fun atmosphere to play in."

The win, combined with Manchester Central's loss to Bishop Guertin, left Pinkerton as the only one-loss team in Division I.

"When you shoot well, that solves a lot of things and these guys have had moments where they really shot well," Pinkerton coach Pete Rosinski said. "We've got more than one guy that’s the key."

North (6-3) kept the pace with the Astros through the first half, trailing by six at halftime and with 4:10 left in the third quarter. But Pinkerton ended the quarter with a 13-0 run that put the game out of reach.

Ronnie Silva led North with 17 points, including three 3-pointers, and Nathan Hale added 16 points. Alonzo Linton was also in double figures with 14 points.

"We pride ourselves on our defense," North interim coach Michael Henderson said. "The last half on Tuesday and the last half (Friday), we didn't play the kind of defense that we expect to play and want to play.

"They shot the lights out of the gym. They're very big and we don't matchup very well size-wise with them. They have three outstanding athletes that can shoot and drive and rebound. We are not as big as they are, so we felt we'd pack it in a little bit, and they shot the lights out."

Both teams were doing that early, as the first quarter feature four lead changes and two ties. Pinkerton took a 21-19 lead into the second quarter, and was able to push it to 10 points, 35-25, with 3:37 left before halftime.

Baskets by Linton and Sclyler Boykin got North within six points, but the Astros answered on a 3 by Nicholas Bortone and a basket by Romick to go up 40-29 with 1:02 to play. Hale made two big plays, driving for a layup and then stealing the ball, after which he found Silva for a buzzer-beating 3 that made it 40-34 Pinkerton going into the half.

It was still a six-point game after a three-point play by Linton made it 48-42 Astros with 4:10 left in the third. And then Pinkerton went off.

Morris started the run with a 3, and Rizzo followed with a jumper and another 3 to make it 56-42\. After stopping North on its next possession, Morris hit another 3, and Matthew Anzivino (six points off the bench) hit a buzzer-beater to put the Astros up 61-42 at the end of the third.

"It was nice to see us shoot well in the third quarter," Rosinski said. "I want efficiency throughout the game, but that's unrealistic. The kids are working hard and a lot of guys contributed."

The Astros went up by as many as 23 in the fourth quarter before a late run by North closed the gap.

Pinkerton returns home on Monday to host Londonderry, while North travels to Rochester to face Spaulding on Tuesday.
