LONDONDERRY - It was another classic chapter in their rivalry, and when the dust settled Friday night, it was a strong fourth quarter that propelled the Pinkerton Academy boys basketball team to a 53-46 win over rival Londonderry.

The game was tied at 37 after three quarters, but the Astros hit all 10 of their free throws in the final period to pull away and seal the victory.

“Only having two practices and then having to play your rival, you’ve got to be ready to go,” Pinkerton coach David Chase said. “Don’t take anything away from Londonderry. They competed hard. In the fourth quarter, we said it’s going to come down to if we make our foul shots. Defensively, we limited them. That’s the recipe for success.”

The game was back and forth throughout as neither team led by more than six through the first three quarters. The lead changed hands seven times and there were eight ties.

While the Astros sealed the game at the free throw line, it was a diverse offensive effort throughout. Sophomore guard Anthony Chinn had a game-high 13 points while freshman Drew Brander added 12 of his own. Senior Justin Dunne had nine points and a game-high nine rebounds.

Pinkerton outrebounded the Lancers 28-25.

“We’re versatile,” Chinn said. “We’ve got a lot of long wings who can stroke it, go to the basket. Our bigs are long. We have a lot of scoring options. Once we learn how to execute we’re going to be a really good team.”

Londonderry led by five points after the first quarter and by two at halftime. With Jackson Cox or Wil Reyes unavailable for the game, the Lancers relied on a deep, young squad to carry them and they almost got to the finish line.

Sophomore Kevin Rourke had nine points and freshman Tyler Brown had nine points off the bench. Freshman forward Tyler Miles had a strong game inside for the Lancers.

“They’re buying in and getting better every day,” Londonderry coach Nate Stanton said. “Their confidence was key for me. Miles hit a nice post-up, he’s talking on defense. He’s a hard worker. Rourke is a good shooter. I love Tyler Brown, our other freshman, coming in and shooting the ball. I’m very excited about them.”

The Astros slowed down the Lancers and forced them into bad shots in the fourth quarter. Londonderry shot 1 of 10 from 3 in the fourth quarter, and the Astros outrebounded the Lancers 10-5.

“We’re still a little rusty on the scoring end,” Chase said. “I thought we rebounded well (Friday), and that’s a big point in the basketball game. We’ve got some good size. If we get some reps in practice I think we have a chance to keep being good.”

The win gave Pinkerton a sweep of the week’s games after a three-point win on Wednesday.
