CONCORD - It was 2021 and Hopkinton High School was at the top of the high school field hockey mountain.

That fall, the Hawks were undefeated champions in Division III, winning the program’s first title since 1992, in just their third final appearance in those 29 seasons.

But things change quick in high school sports, and after that season, Hopkinton lost all its starters, either to graduation or prep school. The varsity team in 2022 had no seniors and finished the year with just two wins.

That number improved to five the next year, and last season, Hopkinton went 10-4 before falling to Berlin in the quarterfinals. It may still be early this season, but through three weeks of the regular season, the Hawks look like they might be all the way back.

Hopkinton went into Friday’s home game against Monadnock at 4-0, including a win over Berlin to go with Tuesday’s 3-0 win over Bishop Brady, which has been in the final five of the last six seasons.

“The season after that (championship), we kind of dropped off, and we’ve been coming back up,” Hopkinton coach Kate Hohenberger said. “This group that are now juniors, they’ve been playing together for years.

“They’re just really learning how to play with each other. The new freshmen that I have coming in have inserted themselves, and they’ve learned from those juniors. It’s really made a big difference with our growth.”

That junior group includes midfielder Autumn Meier, who has five goals so far this season after setting the program record with 33 goals as a sophomore, and Ryan Barrett, who has played mostly midfield this season, but made a beneficial switch for Hopkinton in Tuesday’s win.

“She was playing forward for us (Tuesday), but she normally plays midfield, but we switched her up a little bit to open the right side of the field with Autumn,” Hohenberger said of Barrett. “She just plays really pretty field hockey. It stands out.”

Hopkinton has just three seniors on the roster this year, and while Maddie Dwyer was returning on defense, she was joined by a trio of players who were new to the team or their position, or both, starting with senior Heidi Archambault.

“We just said to her ‘hey, we need a goaltender,’” Hohenberger said. “Heidi is a senior, never played goaltender before, and she said ‘ok sure.’ She has really stepped it up and come out hard.”

Also new to the defense are sisters Emma and Sadie Pelletier, a senior and sophomore, respectively. In fact, Emma Pelletier made such an impact playing with her teammates over the summer that she was selected as a team captain before playing a regular-season game for Hopkinton.

“She started playing with us over the summer and she just connected with the girls,” Hohenberger said. “She’s got a great attitude, she’s positive, she helps support all the girls.

“They’re smart, they play the field, and they see where they’re needed.”

Hohenberger is hoping it all adds up to take the Hawks to a place they haven’t been since that championship season.

“They’re stepping up to the plate,” she said. “They want to meet the same standards I want. I want to make it to final four. We’ve been knocked out a couple of years early. Our goal is to come back and prove ourselves.”
