MANCHESTER - When Nayeli Perez got the ball in the final seconds, there was no thought about anything that had happened in the previous 31-plus minutes of the game.

All the Trinity High School sophomore was thinking about was getting a win for teammate Addison Moynihan on the Pioneers' girls basketball senior night.

Perez dribbled herself open against Windham's zone, and with about 10 seconds left, let go a 3-pointer that found nothing but net to put Trinity up one, and the Pioneers forced the Jaguars into a tough shot on the final possession to hang on for a 37-37 win Wednesday night in a Division I contest.

“I was just thinking about how it’s senior night, and I wanted to win for Addison,” Perez said. “I just wanted to do it for her. I did it and we all won.”

Moynihan, the lone senior for Trinity (9-7), led the Pioneers with 12 points while Summer Cullen added eight points and Perez finished with seven points, with her 3 capping a roller coaster game for the home team.

Trinity jumped out to an early led, and with a little more than five minutes left in the second quarter, had put up 25 points against a Windham (10-6) defense that allowed an average of 36.9 points for a full 32 minutes going into the game.

But up 25-14 early in the second quarter, the Pioneers would go almost 10 minutes without scoring.

“They kept switching from man (defense) to zone,” Trinity coach Cameron Owen said. “We were getting good looks, we just weren’t hitting them. That’s basketball. We kept telling them to weather the storm, take it one possession at a time and the shots will fall.”

At the same time, Windham's shots weren't falling either, and after the Jaguars got a free throw from Elizabeth Grasso (12 points) with 2:46 left in the second quarter, they wouldn't score again for almost eight minutes.

It was 25-19 Trinity at halftime, and that's where it stayed until a free throw by Rileigh Finneran (11 points) with 3:16 left in the third quarter.

“Trinity jumped all over us,” Windham coach Todd Steffanides said. “They started out the game with great energy and it took us too long to match that. I’m extremely proud of our effort in the second half.

“I think we went in, and the initial speed kind of shocked us for a second. It’s hard to guard against that. I think eventually, in the second half or late in the first half, we started to match that speed and intensity.”

Trinity had a 30-22 lead in the final minute of the third, but a 3-pointer by Windham's Madelyn Begley made it a five-point game going into the fourth. It also started an 11-1 run by the Jaguars that saw them take a 33-31 lead with 3:15 remaining.

A free throw by Moynihan and a basket by Sophia Gonzalez put the Pioneers back in front, 34-33, but after a Windham timeout, Finneran drove and scored, and Grace Mondello (six points) followed with a free throw to give the Jaguars a 36-34 lead with a minute to play.

With Trinity unable to find an quick opening against Windham's defense, Owen called a timeout with 28.1 seconds to go and set up a play, but the Jaguars made an adjustment of their own.

“We had our man (defense) sideline out-of-bounds play that they’ve been working on all week, that we really haven’t done much this season,” Owen said. “And they switched to zone and we had to pivot.

“We were just really patient. I give the girls a lot of credit for that. It’s something that we probably wouldn’t have done at the beginning of the year. Nayeli got open and she hit a big shot.”
