PELHAM - Will DeLanoy did his best to inform his Pelham High School boys lacrosse team what it would be up against Wednesday with Kearsarge coming to town.

The Cougars were coming off a solid outing - albeit in a loss - against defending champion Hopkinton, and the Pythons played early like they were expecting a challenge.

Pelham jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the first quarter, led by 10 at halftime, and cruised to a 17-2 win over Kearsarge in a Division III game.

Charlie Katin had five goals and two assists to lead the Pythons (3-0, ARV in the NHHSS Coaches Poll) and also won 10 of 14 faceoffs. Mason Fecteau also had five goals while Evan Haskins had three goals and Riley Nutter added two.

"Giving the guys the right information on what to expect with teams and then they come out and execute, that’s huge," DeLanoy said. "The kids can take the information and execute it.

"We played as a team. When guys are doing things as a team, we have the result we had (Wednesday). A lot of unselfish play, which is great. You want to make sure guys are utilizing the things we’ve set up."

The Pythons also got a big game from long pole Owen Haskins, who drew the assignment of trying to shut down Kearsarge's Tate Nurme; Haskins held the Kearsarge (1-2) junior to just one goal.

"Tate Nurme is a great player and we game-planned for him," DeLanoy said. "Owen did everything I asked him to do leading up to this game in practice. That’s not going to show up in the book. That’s a go-to guy for them and he shut him down."

Alex Swords had the other goal for the Cougars, both of which came in the first half. As the game wore on, Kearsarge struggled maintaining possession, something that coach Zach Matthews was disappointed with after the way his team had played against Hopkinton on Monday.

"I think we had a lot of miscues and a lot of mistakes," Matthews said. "Obviously, that is a very good team, and I think when you play against higher-level competition, that pressure feels like too much for some of the kids. I think we were trying to do too much we didn’t necessarily need to do, things we weren’t comfortable doing, and that led to the skewed result you saw on the field."

Up 12-2 at halftime, Pelham's dominance continued into the second half, as Katin won the opening faceoff and scored 1:02 into the third. It took more than five minutes for Kearsarge to have possession long enough to get a shot off in the quarter, and Pythons goalie Jaxon Snyder came up with the save.

Evan Haskins and Fecteau scored before the end of the quarter to make it 15-2 Pelham going into the fourth.

"They’ve been huge," DeLanoy said of guys like Katin, Fecteau and Evan and Owen Haskins. "Especially because they’ve taken on leadership roles with the younger guys. The fact that their buying in to what we’re trying to do offensively and defensively, that’s going through the whole system, even to the JV guys."

Pelham heads to Monadnock for a 7 p.m. on Friday for a rematch of last year's D3 quarterfinals, in which the Huskies upset the Pythons.

"In the regular season, we snuck by them by one, and then in the playoffs, lost by one, which was a heartbreak," DeLanoy said. "They’re returning a lot of guys, so it’s going to be a great game."
