PELHAM - Michael Larson felt there were a few opportunities for his Pelham High School boys basketball team to put Thursday night's game against Campbell away in the first half.

Better late than never, though, for the Pythons.

Pelham went on a 12-5 run to end the third quarter to stretch a 10-point lead to 17, and after Campbell threatened early in the fourth, the Pythons put the game away for a 70-48 win over the Cougars in a non-division game.

Drew Brown led the way for Pelham (4-2) with 21 points, 14 of which came in the first half, while Derek Crowley added 17 points and Dylan Andrews had 11 points. The Pythons led the entire way except for a minute in the first quarter, and although they were up double digits in the first half, Larson went into halftime feeling like Pelham could have put the game away.

"In the first half, I thought we had an opportunity to get it up to 15 or 20 points at certain points of the game, but we could just never get that next play," the coach said. "We’d score and we couldn’t get that stop to go on a run. To Campbell’s credit, they played hard and they were coming back and answering. That’s a credit to their effort.

"I loved our effort. We came out with effort, but didn’t necessarily play smart to begin the game. We were a little slow in the first half. We talked about a couple of things at halftime and how we wanted to come out strong in the third quarter."

Brown did most of the damage for Pelham in the first half, as the sophomore took control of the offense for a few stretches. The Pythons led 16-7 at the end of the first quarter and pushed the lead to as many as 12 points, including on a 3 by Brown that made it 25-13 with 1:40 left in the half.

But Campbell (4-1) cut into that lead before the break thanks in part to a 3-pointer by Brendan Rice with 10 seconds left in that half to make it 27-19 Pelham. Rice finished with 14 points to lead the Cougars while Chad Martel had nine points, as he was 7 of 10 at the free throw line, and Jake Scafidi added eight points. While Martel had success at the line, the rest of the team was just 6 of 16.

The teams traded baskets to open the third quarter, with Pelham extending the lead and Campbell coming back to keep it a 10-point game. But Brown's second 3 of the game made it 37-24 with 4:27 to go in the quarter and started the Pythons on a run that would give them a 46-29 lead going into the fourth.

Rice and Scafidi each hit a 3-pointer for Campbell to open the fourth and cut Pelham's lead down to 12 points when Larson called a timeout.

"We’d been talking about that the last couple of games, defending the 3-point line," Larson said. "We know they can shoot a lot of 3s, that’s one of their strengths and we’d been working on it in practice. To come out and forget the stuff we’d been working on was a little frustrating. We called a timeout to make sure everybody was on board with what we were doing, and from that point forward, we did pretty well defensively."

Pelham got back-to-back baskets from Andrews and Crowley after the timeout to start the Pythons on an 8-0 run that gave them a 55-35 lead with 5:41 to play and put the game away.

"We can be a good team and beat a lot of good teams, but we can also lose to anyone," Larson said. "We don’t just show and win. Campbell is a good team and they’ve been winning a lot of games. We’re not going to overlook anyone."
