NASHUA - It can be tough for uptempo basketball teams to play when forced to run at a much slower pace.

Against Pembroke Academy's aggressive zone defense, the Bishop Guertin High School boys basketball team managed to keep it together when it had to slow down Monday night and scored on almost every fastbreak opportunity it got.

The result was a 57-52 victory that left coach Jim Migneault feeling pretty good about where the Cardinals (4-4) are heading.

"We always want to peak at the end of the year, and now we're getting better," he said. "I thought we played with a lot of composure. We didn't have a lot of turnovers, we moved the ball well."

Chad Olivieri led Bishop Guertin with 22 points, including several transition baskets in the first half that helped the Cardinals build a 27-20 halftime lead. Kyle Gavin overcame foul trouble to add 12 points while Alex Arika and Jack Zimmerman chipped in with nine and eight points, respectively.

Bishop Guertin led by as many as 11 points in the second half, and took a nine-point lead into the fourth quarter, but Pembroke used an 18-9 run to tie the game at 50 on a 3-pointer by Collin Justin with 2:15 to play.

The Cardinals stayed calm and made their free throws down the stretch, as they went 7 of 10 from the line, after Justin tied it.

"We didn't panic," Migneault said of how the Cardinals played after the game was tied. "I thought we played the last minute very well.

"We wanted the uptempo and we got it at times, and we didn't get it at other times. What I liked was that when we didn't get it, we pulled back out and ran offense. In the past, we were rushing things. So instead of rushing it, we were much more patient with the ball."

Max Curran led Pembroke (4-4) with 22 points while Dominic Timbas had 15 points and Rob Wilson added 12.

But falling into a hole in the first half proved to be too much for the Spartans to overcome in the second.

"The jam we got into (Monday) was in the first half," Pembroke coach Matt Alosa said. "I think we gave BG 10 or 12 points on runout layups.

"In a 50-point game, when you get down and give up points like that, I think in the halfcourt we play pretty good defense, but when you give up fastbreaks like that, you can't come back and win. We put a run on to tie it, but it's a game of runs. That was our run to tie it and BG made some nice plays to finish the game."

Pembroke held a 9-8 lead at the end of the first quarter in which Bishop Guertin maintained possession for long stretches as it looked for ways to attack the Spartans' zone. The Cardinals couldn't find many openings until a pair of 3-pointers by Zimmerman in the second quarter seemed to loosen things up.

"We hit a couple of wing shots, that's going to open things up," Migneault said. "They're long, but we wanted to still go inside, even though they're big. We did a pretty good job of doing that."

The Spartans struggles in the transition game then allowed Bishop Guertin to take control in the second and third quarter.

"We try to send three guys to the backboard offensively, but you can't watch the ball when BG is trying to run," Alosa said. "We have a tough time playing fast. We can do it, but it's in our best interest to slow the game down a little bit and get a halfcourt game. You could see some of the possessions BG had some trouble when they had to play against our halfcourt defense."

After Justin's 3 tied the game, Arika and Gavin each made a pair of free throws to make it a four-point game with a minute to play. Pembroke answered quickly with a basket by Timbas, and at the other end, Olivieri made one of two free throws to make it a 55-52 Bishop Gueritn lead with 27.9 seconds left.

Curran was able to get an open look from 3 on Pembroke's next possession, but his shot hit off the front of the rim and Arika grabbed the rebound. The senior was fouled and made both his free throws to give the Cardinals a five-point lead with 10.9 seconds left.

"This was important," Migneault said. "We lost a two-point game the other night to Winnacunnet, so we need to win some of these close games, especially right now. We want to make a run at the end, but we have to win some now to set us up in that position."
