The Panthers got out to 31-7 lead at halftime, but with under five minutes left in the game, South’s advantage had been whittled down to 10 points. That’s when a mistake by the Crusaders gave the Panthers the break they needed. Lining up to punt, South’s Keith Farkas saw that Memorial had no one on the right side of the field. Once he received the snap, Farkas began to roll in the direction, waiting for someone on the defense to move to that side. No one did, and Farkas took off. Seventy-nine yards later, he had a touchdown and South had secured its first Division I victory of the season. “It was supposed to be a regular punt, but they had nine guys on the field,” South coach Scott Knight said. “I was talking and I glanced and said ‘oh no.’ And then there was nobody there and he was gone. If anybody came up, he’d have kicked the ball. We needed to get a first down or a touchdown. We needed to move the chains.” The touchdown allowed the Panthers a sigh of relief, but they know there is still a lot left to work on to get back to the playoffs. “You see what you’re capable of doing on both sides,” Knight said. “You’re capable of exploding a jumping out 31-0, which is good. You’re capable of doing that, but you’re also capable of losing focus and losing control of the game. I think they learned how quickly you can lose a lead like that if you don’t stay locked in.” South will need to stay locked when it takes the field this week against Concord, a team that’s been the surprise of Division I this season. Winless a year ago, the Crimson Tide are 2-1 and are fourth in the division standings. The teams are scheduled to meet at 7 p.m. Friday at Stellos Stadium. After switching over to a spread offense last year, Concord’s players seem to have a better grasp on it this season. “They’ve got a couple dangerous kids for sure,” Knight said. “They fly around on defense. We’re going to have to play well to win. If we don’t play well, we’re going to be in for a long night.” A year ago, South won in a blowout, 44-7, but Knight felt that final score was a bit misleading. “In last year’s win, we scored a lot of points, but looking at the film, a lot of those touchdowns were not by design,” he said. “There were some broken plays and some stuff happening. We played really good defense in that game.” This week, the Panthers’ defense should get a boost with the return of outside linebacker Chris Thistle, who was hurt during last week’s game, but should be ready to play Friday. “One of our weaknesses is outside linebacker,” Knight said. “We don’t have a lot of depth there right now. We had some young kids on the field. A couple of them played OK, but we were in disarray sometimes. We had a lot of kids out there who weren’t quite ready. We’ve worked hard at it this week.” The Panthers and Tide will go at it at 7 p.m. on Friday at Stellos Stadium in Nashua.
