The Nashua High School South football wanted to learn what it was made of last week against Pinkerton Academy.

The Panthers found out they could hang, but they were a little disappointed they couldn’t do more than that.

“The good thing is, we matched up fine physically,” South coach Scott Knight said. “We were more than capable of winning the game, so that’s good. But the negative part is, we didn’t win.

Will we meet them again? If we take care of business, we could. Would we feel good about seeing them again? Absolutely.”

South had plenty of opportunities to beat Pinkerton. The Panthers failed to score after getting the ball inside the Astros’ 5-yard line in the first half, and then after taking the lead late in third quarter, they gave up a 99-yard kickoff return.

From there, Pinkerton was able to eat up the clock with a long drive in the fourth quarter and force a turnover to end the game.

“I was concerned because we made a lot of mistakes that a veteran team shouldn’t make,” Knight said. “We had other miscues that weren’t visible to the naked eye, a route here or missed block here. For the most part, most of what we saw is fixable once we bring our mental game for four quarters. The kids have had a good week and we’re ready to move.”

The Panthers go outside of Division I again this week, going down to Lowell for a 7 p.m. start Friday night.

Although the game doesn’t count against the standings, Knight wants to see his team perform well.

“We need to play well either way,” he said. “I’d like to think if we don’t play well, we get another week to fix some stuff. But if we do play well, that’s good. We need to get the monkey off our back and beat a good team. We have confidence, but it would be good to go into next week rolling instead of reeling.”

The Red Raiders opened their season last week by going on the road and beating Masconomet Regional 22-14\. Angel Escalera led Lowell with 181 yards rushing and two touchdowns, while quarterback Kyle Edwards and RJ Noel rotated in and out of the lineup, as the Raiders scored 19 points in the second quarter and held on for the win.

“Lowell is a pretty quick team,” Knight said. “They have good athletes. They’re not big, but they’re quick. They’re a fast-paced offense, like we can be. Our guys are going to have to get in the huddle (on defense) and get set and know where to line up.”

On offense, the Panthers were forced to shuffle their offensive line last week, because of an injury to right tackle Cody Mawn. Right guard Brad Carrier slid over to the tackle spot and Dylan Flesh moved in at guard.

While there were some breakdowns on pass protection, Knight was pleased by the way the linemen, including new left guard Nick Marquis, played together against Pinkerton.

Knight was unsure if Mawn would be available for Friday’s game, but lineman Julier Rivera is returning and can also fill in at right tackle.

“He’s a good player,” Knight said. “He’s going to get some work at right tackle. We may be down a guy, but we gained a guy and the guy that filled in last week was good.”
