WEARE - The uncontrollables were out in full force Thursday for the Oyster River High School field hockey team.

Road game with no transportation. Chill in the air with a stiff wind to accompany it. Turf team playing on the grass field of the two-time defending division champions.

All that, plus a goal that was waved off in the first quarter, didn't prevent the Bobcats from doing what they'd set out to do.

Oyster River scored two goals that counted in the first quarter, held on defense enough in the second, and battled through the final half to get a 2-1 win over John Stark in a contest between top four teams in Division II.

Olivia Andersen and Mia Weglarz each had a goal in the final four minutes of the first quarter to give the Bobcats (12-1, No. 10 in the NHHSSports Coaches Poll) a lead they wouldn't relinquish and goalie Brooke Nelson, who had seven saves, made a big one late to keep Oyster River in front.

"You don’t beat 10 playing as a silo," Oyster River coach Anne Golding said. "It was a solid team effort (and) more experience as we go into the tournament. We’re on the road, we had travel disruption, it’s cold, we’re playing John Stark, we’re on grass. All the things, and we just go from there."

Despite all that, the Bobcats started strong, keeping the ball in the Generals' end for the first five minutes of the game. But once John Stark (11-3) was able to flip the field, it was able to get a run of penalty corners that appeared to shift momentum.

Four corners over a five-minute stretch had Oyster River playing a lot in its defensive circle, and it looked to get worse when Rowynn Pickering was given a card with 4:42 left in the quarter.

But right after that, Nelson made a save and the Bobcats were able to get going in the other direction, leading to Andersen's goal with 3:23 remaining in the first.

It looked like Oyster River scored again moments later, but had a goal waved off on a dangerous play. That only deterred the Bobcats for a few seconds, as they got the ball back and Weglarz scored to make it 2-0.

"I welcome things like that because the challenge, we learn from it," Golding said of the first quarter. "We tuck it away and say how do we prevent that or what did we like about that recovery? What didn’t we like about it? We tweak it and we move forward."

Caylin Worthen got the Generals on the board with 7:14 left in the second quarter, when she moved into the circle, weaved her way around two defenders and put a shot on goal. The ball hit Nelson's pads and then deflected off her stick, but still had enough on it to find the back of the cage to make it 2-1.

Nelson came up with two more saves in the quarter, including one on a corner, to help keep it a one-goal game at halftime. Each team had five corners in the second half, but couldn't capitalize and the score remained the same.

"The focus has been on defense and they’re solid in the back," Golding said. "They’re playing smart, playing together, staying in good head space. They’re checking all those boxes."
