AMHERST - Anne Golding spent time during the preseason talking to the Oyster River High School field hockey team about how it has what it takes to be a contending team this year.

Tuesday afternoon at Souhegan, the Bobcats did their best to show their coach was right.

After the Sabers took the lead with under five minutes left in regulation, Oyster River tied the game with 1:19 to play, and took the game in overtime, as Rowynn Pickering scored on a breakaway to give the Bobcats a 3-2 win in Division II action.

Eliza Farwell scored the tying goal and Nora Rogers also had a goal while Olivia Andersen assisted on all three goals for Oyster River (1-1).

"We talked all preseason about how we are a very strong team and a very skilled and capable team," Golding said. "They’re very smart field hockey players, they’re very skillful field hockey players. That’s evidence of that, when you see a team that continues to just push and they don’t let up and don’t get discouraged. That’s exactly what I expected."

Brooke Edmond added eight saves for the Bobcats and Grey Bowden had a solid game defensively.

Ori Dart had a goal and an assist for Souhegan (1-1, No. 7 in the NHHSSports Coaches Poll) while Ella Russell also scored. Dart's goal came with 4:28 remaining and gave the Sabers a 2-1 lead but it was short lived.

"We take that big breath (after the goal), and they did not take their foot off the gas," Souhegan coach Kelli Braley said. "Full credit to them, they played a full 60-plus, almost 70 minutes."

Amelia Warecki made seven saves for the Sabers, but overall, they struggled defensively.

"We had a tough go defensively, and I don’t just mean our defense," Braley said. "Our team defense, recovery and we didn’t hold space terribly well.

"We got off to a good start in the first quarter. We’ve just got to work on capitalizing on those chances because in the end all you need is one. They proved that at the end of regulation."

Souhegan had a handful of corners to start the game, but couldn't capitalize, and Rogers made it 1-0 Oyster River with 7:14 to play in the first quarter. Russell tied it up for the Sabers just two minutes into the second, but the Bobcats had a pair of corners after that and came up just short.

On the second one, a ball sent from low in the circle trickled through and rolled parallel to the goal line, but Oyster River's Rose Goldsmith was unable to get a stick on it. It remained a 1-1 game at halftime.

"You can’t hold on to those things because the reality is, once that second has passed, it’s over," Golding said. "There’s really no point of seeing it in your nightmares. We talked about how well we were playing as a group, made a couple of little adjustments, and that was it. It was about focusing on one quarter at a time and just keep playing."

Play went back and forth in the midfield for most of the third quarter, but the Bobcats started to build momentum early in the fourth. A couple of scoring chances came up just off the mark and Oyster River couldn't capitalize on a corner with about nine minutes remaining.

Souhegan responded with a surge of its own, getting a pair of corners before Dart scored for a 2-1 lead with 4:28 left in the regulation. Oyster River responded with a couple of chances after the goal before Farrell hammered in a shot with 1:19 remaining.

With time winding down in overtime, Andersen was able get the ball out of a scrum at midfield and send a pass deep enough for Pickering to chase after it alone.

"My team got it away from our circle and one of my other teammates, Olivia (Andersen), passed it up to me," Pickering said. "I got a straight shot to the goal. It definitely helped and that she passed a fair amount in front of me. I shot once, missed, got it back, shot again between my legs."

The ball made its way across the goal line and the Bobcats celebrated around Pickering.

"Our forward line, generally speaking, is pretty fast," Golding said. "I wasn’t surprised to see it happen, but it’s reassuring as a coach when you have a forward that can have that breakaway, be in that pressure situation, and see the clock, knows what’s at stake and keep the composure to finish."
