GOFFSTOWN - Sam Guilmette and the Oyster River-Newmarket boys lacrosse team talked before Friday's game against Goffstown about how much the outcome could impact the Bobcats' season.

So when the Grizzlies tied the game at the buzzer to force overtime, the senior felt his stomach drop.

"That was my guy and I let that happen," Guilmette said. "It was tough, but the guys pulled me together in the huddle and that’s what we needed to get back out there."

After Goffstown had a shot to win it early in the first overtime, when a shot clanged off the crossbar, ORN took the win with 37.4 seconds left in the second overtime. Guilmette found Alex Moody for a manup goal and the Bobcats escaped with a 7-6 win that helped them keep pace with the teams in the top half of the Division II standings.

"We talked about that on the ride up here," ORN coach Ruppy Hailey said. "It could determine our first-round opponent. It could determine whether we’re at home or not. It could determine a second-round opponent. We knew there was a lot on the line coming in."

The Bobcats now sit at 5-3 in the division, just a game out of the eighth spot in the standings. While there are still four weeks left in the regular season, the coaches and players know that with what's left on their schedule, they need to take care of business when they can.

"This was huge for us," Guilmette said. "We haven’t had a home playoff game since my sophomore year. We’re looking to get another home playoff game, so this was huge going for that."

Guilmette and Cole Levesque combined to help ORN win 11 of 16 faceoffs, including all six in the first half, which allowed the Bobcats to dominate possession for long stretches.

But when ORN made mistakes, Goffstown found ways to capitalize on them, which included the first goal of the game. Eli Dillaway scored 1:15 into the game, as the Grizzlies jumped on a Bobcats' turnover to take the lead.

"We’re a very young team, and these guys were ready to play, but sometimes we make very young mistakes," Hailey said. "I thought for the most part, we were able to bounce back from those mistakes because they’d hurt us. We’d make a mistake and they’d score a goal. Goffstown was ready to go (Friday), too. If we were going to hand it to them, they were going to take it."

Moody answered with the first of his three goals two minutes later to tie the game, but despite outshooting Goffstown, 17-5, in the first half, the Grizzlies got the only other goal. Sam Chapman made it 2-1 with 7:07 left in the second quarter with Goffstown a man up and that's where it stood until the second half.

Travis Faul scored with 8:45 left in the third to tie the game at 2 and Levesque gave the Bobcats their first lead with 6:12 to go in the quarter.

But the lead wouldn't last long, as Goffstown got back-to-back goals from Noah Bless and Ethan Hansen just 40 seconds apart to give the Grizzlies a 4-3 lead. Another goal from Bless with 1:43 to go in the quarter made it a two-goal lead for Goffstown, the largest for either team on the day.

"We were sloppy, but I think the thing is, it’s how we react to that that will determine how good we’re going to be," Hailey said. "Going into the season, we thought that defense and goaltending was going to be a big strength for the team and it has been, but it’s been a little inconsistent at times.

"If we give up a bad play, we get a little frustrated, and that’s when you see guys starting to swing sticks and take penalties. When it snowballs, we can’t recover from that. To see us keep our heads on (Friday) and perform better than we did the last possession, that’s what I’m happy about."

It took a little time, but ORN got things going in the fourth, starting with a goal by Guilmette with just under six minutes to play. A couple of saves by goalie Finn Mason (1o saves) at the other end gave the Bobcats momentum and Moody tied it with 3:11 remaining.

After a faceoff win, Guilmette took the ball behind the goal and found Talon Beyer cutting to the front of the net for the go-ahead scored with 1:23 to go. Goffstown was able to control the faceoff but turned it over, and the Bobcats tried to extend the lead, but Grizzlies goalie Sean Cote (nine saves) came up a stop.

ORN took a timeout with 38.6 seconds remaining, but things went downhill from there. The Bobcats turned the ball over, and while Mason was able to make a save in the final seconds, the Grizzlies regained possession, and just before the buzzer sounded, Hansen found the back of the net.

"We just got caught up behind one of their guys and we had a shorty on (Hansen), that was probably one of their better players," Hailey said. "He made us pay. It was good to bounce back. I thought we played pretty well in the first overtime. We had a long defensive stand there, that was huge."

That stand helped the Bobcats get to the second overtime, where Moody ended the day with his third goal.

"Alex was huge," Guilmette said. "We could see he was tired, but he really wanted to get the win. He’s a big shooter for us. I drew my guy down, so he was wide open and I trust him to take that shot."

ORN has been relying on freshmen, like Moody and Ty Callander, to contribute and many of them have stepped up.

"(Moody) can sling it," Hailey said. "He shoots just as hard as any freshman in the state. On the other side, the lefty, Ty Callander, another freshman, he can crank it, too. What we’re telling them in practice is we’re going to get that ball to you.

"Before you probably had time to fool around and make a move and then shoot it. Now the defenses are just too big and strong, you’re going to have to catch and shoot quick. That’s what Moody did on that final goal. That was what I was hoping to do, we had a couple of other opportunities to do that."
