At the time, it just seemed like a hustle play by Arie Breakfield, but it started the Spaulding High School boys basketball team on a run that set up the Red Raiders first win of the regular season, a 77-75 overtime victory against Salem last Friday.

With Breakfield on the bench for a long stretch in the third quarter, after the junior was hit in the face and appeared to have a bloody nose, Salem was able to turn a close game into a nine-point lead after going on a 13-2 run.

The Blue Devils took advantage in the paint, scoring 10 points during that run from in close, including two layups by Kyle Poulin and a putback by Nicholas Hayes.

After a Spaulding timeout, Breakfield returned to the floor, and a few possessions later, a shot by the Red Raiders (1-3) was off the mark and the rebound caromed out to the sideline. Salem's Trevor DeMinico appeared to have the ball shielded from Breakfield as it went out of bounds, which would give the Blue Devils possession.

But at the last moment, Breakfield got an arm around DeMinico and got a piece of the ball, sending it back into play and right to Isaiah Rose.

Rose drove to the basket as Salem (3-2) tried to get back, scored and was fouled by James Hayes. The three-point play got the lead back to six points, and after the Blue Devils missed a 3 at the other end, Spaulding cut it to four.

Salem got two points back, but Rose scored again, helped force turnover and then hit a 3 to make it a one-point game. And after the Blue Devils went up three with 20 seconds to go in the third, Breakfield hit a buzzer-beating 3 to tie the game at 50.

"The offense, in stretches, was good," Spaulding coach Tim Cronin said. "With Rose and Breakfield, they both had a couple of stretches where they were unstoppable. The word consistency comes up and we’re not there yet, so we’ve got to improve there. We’ve got to be more consistent on both ends of the floor."

Breakfield and Dante McKenney both finish with 20 points, but it was Rose, who scored 27 off the bench, who helped keep the Red Raiders in the game offensively.

"Just keep with the flow," Rose said of coming off the bench. "There’s a lot of energy, so I have to have a lot of energy, so I have to stay high and just play."

Rose turned into a matchup problem for Salem, according to coach Rob McLaughlin, who thought the sophomore would be starting.

"With that spark he gives them off the bench, it’s not a bad role," the Salem coach said. "We had a tough matchup with him, with a couple of guys. When Rose got it on the wing, he didn’t hesitate, he went to the rack. You’ve almost got to make sure you keep him from touching it."

Spaulding hopes to carry some of the momentum from last Friday's win into its first home game of the season Tuesday night against Winnacunnet. The Red Raiders opened the season with four road games, including trips to Londonderry and Nashua South, to go with the game at Salem.

"It’s very exciting," Rose said. "And first home game on Tuesday. It will feel real good. We’ll come out hot hopefully."
