NASHUA - The Bishop Guertin High School field hockey team controlled the first half of Friday's game against Manchester Central, but Steve Duprat thought his Cardinals weren't playing their best.

The coach let his players know that at halftime and the Cardinals took heed.

Brooke Yabroudy scored twice in the first eight minutes of the second half and Bishop Guertin used a combination of grit and stronger passing to never let up in a 5-0 win over the Little Green at Stellos Stadium.

Yabroudy finished with three goals and two assists while Rylee Bouvier had a goal and two assists as the Cardinals (2-0) carried over the pressure they had been able to put on Central's defense in the first half, but improved their play once they got in the circle.

"I think we came out a little slow," Duprat said. "At halftime, we picked it up and had a great second half. We were slow in the first half and not making connections. We started making passes."

Making better passes and decisions with the ball was the emphasis at halftime.

"I honestly think we kind of settled down a little bit and we started using our passing game, which helps us tremendously," Yabroudy said. "Once we connected with each other, it’s pretty unstoppable going up the field. It’s pretty awesome."

Stephanie Coulombe also had a goal and Lindsay Hult and Sarah Coyle each added an assist, while Bishop Guertin held the Little Green (0-1-1) without a shot and just one penalty corner. The Cardinals had eight corners of their own while Central goalie Julia Pariseau made eight saves, five of them in a 10-minute stretch of the second half that kept it a 3-0 game.

"They were playing well in the circle, and we were, offensively, committing fouls in the circle," Duprat said. "That just takes away opportunities for yourself. Part of that is them putting pressure on us inside the circle and we’re making mistakes."

Coulombe put the Cardinals up 1-0 just 9:41 into the game, getting behind the Central defense and deflecting a pass from Hult by Pariseau, but that would be the only goal of the first half.

The Little Green opened the second half with possession but turned it over and Bishop Guertin quickly went the other way. A penalty on the Cardinals in the circle ended the chance, but another turnover gave Bishop Guertin the ball in close and Yabroudy made it count, converting a pass from Bouvier.

"Sometimes it just takes out the air of your opponent, scoring that quickly, especially when they had possession to start the half," Duprat said. "They had possession, come out and turn it over, and we get that goal pretty quickly. It gets that energy level up and you’re excited and want to go from there."

The Cardinals kept going, getting the ball back, and after an unsuccessful corner, Yabroudy found the back of the goal just 6:43 later, with Bouvier picking up the assist.

"I don’t know, I was just being aggressive," Yabroudy said. "Every ball I saw, I tried to run to no matter what. If it worked, if it caused a corner, it caused a corner. If it was a goal, it was a goal. Everyone was giving great balls into the circle, too."

Bouvier scored with three minutes left to make it 4-0 and Yabroudy got her third of the game 54 seconds after that to finish the scoring.
