Keith Bertrand can see a lot of potential when he looks at the Nashua High School North boys lacrosse team.

There's been a lot of it filling the North gym for the last two weeks, and it's not just because the Titans' numbers are at their highest in the coach's five seasons.

"This is probably the most I've ever had and it’s close to 50," Bertrand said. "The Nashua Blast is having a bit of a renaissance and we’re getting kids out, and not just bodies, but solid players. It's a huge help."

It's a far cry from a year ago, when North had just 32 players at the end of the year, and had to cancel junior varsity games because of injuries and eligibility issues. It was a step back in Bertrand's eyes, after the team had made the postseason the year before.

"Last year, we had a tough year," the coach said. "The year before, I thought we had made progress. This year, I think we're going to make a big step, if guys stay healthy and eligible. I always have high expectations. Since I've been here, our goal is always to get to the final four. We want to be on the T-shirt. I like what we've got."

The big question mark for North will be depth, and how quickly some that potential gets fulfilled.

"From one to 10 on the roster, I feel we can play with anybody," Bertrand said. "My concern is going to be from 10 to 20 or 22\. I don't know what to expect and that's kind of the fun and exciting part. I look at the freshmen and I see nothing but vast potential. I don't know what they are capable of yet, and that's awesome.

"One thing I like about this group is that it's a fun group. Usually, I stress from the beginning of the season, if your teammate makes a good play in practice or in a game, no matter what, get in the habit of getting excited for your teammate. That raises moral and it didn't take long. We're having a lot more fun at practice. I've changed my tone a little bit and I've seen results of that."

North will co-host a preseason jamboree Saturday with Nashua South at Stellos Stadium.
