Its different year and a different season, but the goal remains the same for the Nashua High School North boys track team – put a banner on the wall.
While the Titans suffered some big losses from last year’s indoor team that finished third in Class L, enough of the key components are returning to make North one of the contenders.
“We have big shoes to fill, but I think the kids are ready to do it,” North coach Nate Burns said. “I think the indoor is a little tougher for us than outdoor will be because we get an extra hurdle event and we get a couple of extra jumping events. We have some good returners. It’s a tough division. We’ve got some good young kids. We’ve got a good base and these guys are really working towards it.”
The Titans lost three athletes who scored points for them a year ago, including Kevin Rosenberg, who finished first in the shot put. Also gone are Matt McCarty (second in the 600-meters) and Myles Parker (fourth in the 300); McCarty and Parker were both also members of relay teams that finished in the top six.
But North also returns a solid group, including Eric Muite, who won the 55 hurdles a year ago; Andre Williams, who qualified in both the 55 and the 300 last year; and Jahmar Gathright, who qualified in both the long jump and the high jump.
“We’re probably the strongest at the sprints and hurdles,” Burns said. “I think that will be our strength throughout the season.”
Burns is also hoping that Devin Motivala and Spencer Nelson can provide some points in the distance events. Both qualified in the 1,000 and 3,000, respectively, last season, but neither placed.
In the throws, Tim Coy, James Murphy and Mike Lynch will try to replace the points that Rosenberg scored last season.
“We’re kind of senior heavy, but these guys have been working hard for four years and they want to leave their mark,” Burns said. “We’ve just got to work hard. These guys, they’re focused and they’ve just got to maintain that.”
North opens its season Saturday at Dartmouth College.
