The photo at the top of this post is just that moment. While on vacation the first week of August, I was messing around with my camera, trying to take some night pictures of a crescent moon over Moosehead Lake in Maine, and somehow, that happened. Don't know how, don't know why, and I couldn't do it again. Once upon a time, when I took more than just sports photos, I probably could have told you. Right now, I'll just accept that little bit of luck and then move on with my day. As we all get ready for the start of another fall high school sports season, and another school year in general, that photo made me think about this website. What it's been over the last 12-plus years, how it got here, and where it's going. There have been too many times to count where I've spent a lot of time trying to plan out a week's worth of coverage or how I want to cover a season. Sometimes, it's worked out better than I could have imagined, and even more times, it's not come close. I started this website with an idea of what I wanted it to become, and in some ways, it's turned out that way. But there are a lot of things that have happened over the last decade-plus that have altered those plans, and that's not just because of a global pandemic. Back when I started this venture in 2010, I wanted to be the place that everyone in the state could go to get the basic information on what has happening in high school sports. Scores from games, who were the key players in those games, results from meets, and standings and records from years past, all information that I wanted to easily be able to find as a sports reporter at a newspaper. That's a lot, and I soon learned that while you can try to get people to submit information, you just can't make them. So as it became time to go to a subscription-based model for the site, those plans had to change. I've still tried to keep up with standings and playoff results and even scores (coaches, feel free to keep sending them to nhhighschoolsports@gmail.com, by the way), but there's only so much that can be done in some cases. As time went on, I felt it was a bigger draw to focus on specifics. Get all the details in a couple niches rather than cast a wide net and skim the surface of a lot of areas. That's how I've ended up covering the sports I do - football and field hockey in the fall, basketball in the winter, lacrosse in the spring. I would love to add more coverage of other sports someday, but right now, this is what works and I'm going to continue doing it. But this year will see a few changes to that coverage. The biggest change you'll likely see at first is the way I cover games. No longer will I be going to one (or two or three) games a day for six days a week and then writing a game story about each one. That took up a lot of time and energy, and I'm not as young as I used to be, and to be honest, that isn't what grabs attention, except for in a few cases. Game stories usually have the lowest number of pageviews on the site, and that makes sense. Outside of a handful of matchups or playoff games, fans of the two teams involved are often times the only ones interested. So my focus on reporting at those games will shift. I'll still be doing the highlight videos from games, and in fact, I might even be doing more of them. But I'll also be focusing more on the kind of stories that draw more interest - features, analysis, and a few notebooks here and there. As I get a little more familiar with the field hockey community, the coverage of that sport will continue to grow. This year, I'm adding several new features to highlight field hockey, including a preseason watch list and postseason all-state team. We'll also have a weekly coaches poll and a weekly podcast, the first part of which has already been recorded. The podcast will be posted on Wednesdays starting this week, while the preseason watch list and the coaches poll will run later in the week, along with previews for all three divisions. This week will also see the return of the football podcast, which will be posted on Tuesdays. There's one other big announcement coming for the fall season, but that one is so big, I'm going to wait until Wednesday, so be sure to check back in for that one. Summer seems to get shorter every year, and it's hard to believe that games start for real in just a few days.
