Add Mother Nature to the list of opponents unable to stop the Souhegan High School football team’s passing attack.

Despite wind and rain and frigid air, the Sabers didn’t hesitate to take to the skies against Milford.

Quarterback Mike Luks threw for almost 200 yards and four touchdowns as Souhegan remained undefeated in Division III with [a 41-7 win](http://www.nashuatelegraph.com/sportshighschoolsports/881886-221/sabers-air-it-out-over-spartans.html?ref=nh-highschoolsports.com) over the Spartans.

Luks completed 67 percent of his throws for 192 yards and had touchdown passes to Nick Hession (twice), Matt Schagrin and Brendan McKenna, and the Sabers’ defense helped blow open a 20-7 game in the fourth quarter.

“Obviously we knew they were going to throw it well regardless of the weather,” Milford coach Keith Jones said. “A lot of people can say a lot of things about how you play your coverage against those big, tall wideouts. We’ve got what we’ve got. They know they’ve got a 145-pound corner covering a 6-4 kid. He’s gonna catch that ball and he’s going to get yardage.”

Hession caught five balls for 44 yards and two scores, while Schagrin also caught five for 97 yards and another touchdown and McKenna added 38 yards and a score on his three receptions.

“In what I thought were conditions that were less than ideal for throwing the ball, pass blocking by the line and our passing by Mike Luks and the receiver play was excellent,” Souhegan coach Mike Beliveau said. “I was surprised by the final score because I thought the game was, throughout, closer than the score indicates. Milford is a very good football team and just a couple of things got away from them at the end.”

The Spartans (3-2 in division, 3-4 overall) trailed 14-7 at halftime thanks to a late first-half drive that ended on a 3-yard run by Max Goudreau.

Souhegan (5-0, 6-1) took the opening kickoff of the second half and went 68-yards in six plays, going up by two scores on Luks’s 13-yard pass to Schagrin. A bad snap on the extra point made it 20-7 Sabers with over nine minutes left in the third quarter.

After the teams traded punts, Milford started from its own 40 and got a 28-yard pass play from Bud Theriault to Joe Albina. Two plays later, Theriault found Albina again for what would have been another first down inside Souhegan’s 20-yard line, but Albina fumbled on the play and Chris Chininis recovered for the Sabers at the 10.

The fumble was one of five lost for the Spartans, and while three of those led to Souhegan touchdowns, that one might have been the most costly.

“That was a huge one,” Jones said. “We go in (there) and hopefully score to make 20-14 and it’s still a great football game. If you make mistakes, you have to be able to overcome them and I don’t think we did.”

Milford’s defense was able to force a punt and Schagrin’s kick went just three yards from the line of scrimmage before going out of bounds. The Spartans took over at the 14, but lost two yards and turned the ball over on downs.

“That was amazing,” Beliveau said. “All year long, our defense continues to create turnovers, giving the offense great opportunities. I thought our defense played fabulous throughout the entire game.”

Souhegan turned that stop into another touchdown for a 28-7 lead. Milford fumbled again on its next series, and this one was returned 28 yards by Terry Dugdale to make it a 35-7 game with 6:10 left.

“They’re a great football team,” Jones said. “They made plays and they capitalized on mistakes. Hopefully we get to see them again in November.”
