NASHUA - The Nashua High School South boys basketball team needed experience down the stretch of Monday's game against Milford.

Enter senior Mike Osgood.

With the Panthers battling the Spartans in the opening round of the Chick-Fil-A Holiday Tournament, Osgood shouldered the load when South needed someone to.

Osgood scored nine of his game-high 23 points in the fourth quarter to lift the Panthers to a 65-58 win over Milford. The win sends South to the semifinals, where it will face Goffstown at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.

Nashua North also took care of business, jumping out to an early lead to beat Souhegan 70-48, in the late game Monday. The Titans will face Alvirne in the other semifinal Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

After falling behind early, South looked like it would cruise past Milford, taking a 10-point lead early in the second quarter. But the Spartans fought back, tying the game at 25 with a 10-0 run, and the teams battled back and forth the rest of the way.

A 3-pointer by Drew Lesmerises pulled Milford to within one, 57-56, with 3:27 to play, but South ended the game on an 8-2 run to advance.

"As I told our guys at one of the last timeouts, this is perfect for us," South coach Nate Mazerolle said. "This is a game that doesn't count, and we have to learn how to maintain a lead and win a game. Mike (Osgood) was here as a sophomore when we made our run to the semis (in 2013), so he knows what it's all about. Most of these guys don't. He's a stabilizing force and I think that's important for the younger kids to see."

Zavier Williams added 11 points for the Panthers and Ryan Penkala came off the bench to score 11 more while DJ Frechette chipped in with 10.

Milford was led by Jack Briggs, who scored a team-high 14 points, including two 3-pointers, while Lesmerises added 11 points. While no other Spartans player had more than eight points, Milford got scoring from nine different players.

"We have a bunch of good players, probably about 10 of them," Milford coach Dan Murray said. "What we did, what we've been teaching them, is to get out and run that break and get those outlets. We had that run in that second quarter and it was all off that. It's when we get into that halfcourt set and we've got to learn a little bit of patience."

And gain a little bit of experience, as the Spartans struggled to get their offense going in the later stages of a close game.

"We didn't execute at the end," Murray said. "We called that timeout and we wanted to go in our motion. Out of that timeout, we went and took one in transition one-on-four. That's what we said we didn't want to do and then they got some quick hoops. We took a step up in our game, but we still have a few to make."

In the final game of the day, North led 22-11 at the end of the first quarter and was up 19 points on Souhegan at halftime. The Sabers were able to cut that lead to 14 early in the fourth, but the Titans continued to pour it on, putting up 20 points in the final eight minutes.

Nate Hale led the way for North with 23 points, including four 3-pointers, while Brennan Kastens added 14 and Brandon Rodriguez had 13\. Ronnie Silva was also in double figures with 11 points.

Souhegan got 16 points from Alex Hill and Isaac Nevrla added eight. The Sabers will take on Thornton Academy at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
