Against Dover on Thursday, the Panthers solved whatever problem they were having. South set the tone early in the first set and the Green Wave struggled to recover in a 3-0 win for the Panthers in Division I action. Game scores were 25-12, 25-21 and 25-23. Feeding off a loud student section, South (15-0) cranked up the intensity from the start of the match, getting out to an 18-5 lead in the first set. Kara Kelliher led the Panthers with 10 kills and Catherine Covert had seven kills while Anne Sherman recorded 15 assists. "We’ve been struggling a little bit with elevating our game and I think we came out (Thursday) and were really focused," South coach Wayne Siejkowski said. "They were looking forward to this one and we tried to get out to a good head start. We came out with a lot of energy and kept riding that through. "We’ve struggled this year in our first set a lot. We’ve talked about how to come out and set the tone. Because of the recent success we’ve had, we’re getting the best of everyone we play. That first game is crucial for us to step up and just put a stop to it." The Panthers never gave Dover (12-4) a chance to get started, as they won seven of the first eight points, with three aces. Olivia Johnson had a service run of seven straight points and South went up 23-7 before the Green Wave were able to get a couple of points back. "They were playing not to lose instead of playing to win," Dover coach Whitney Carrier said. "We can’t play like that against an undefeated team. We have to come out and play hard every point, not dig ourselves a hole right in the beginning." Dover got eight kills and nine digs from Rachel Vitko while Caitlin Quinn had eight assists and five aces and Kyra Cantwell also had eight assists. The Green Wave took their first lead of the night to open the second set, going up 6-3 early, but the Panthers took six straight points, with Covert serving, to take a 9-6 lead. Dover came back to tie it at 12, but a 7-0 run, this time with Paige Garland at the service line, gave South a 19-12 advantage. "Our intensity has been up," Covert said. "Our passing has been great, so our setting has been great. It’s been all around great play for us. Something just clicks in our mindset sometimes and when it does, we’re just on." Dover was able to get within two points in the second set, but South held on for the win. "It puts more pressure on them to figure out what to do to win the next one," Siejkowski said of what effect the first-set win had on the rest of the match. "I think it put us in a position where they would try to figure out what to do and we could counter. Every time they adjusted, we adjusted back, and I think the pressure was on them to do that after that first game." The Green Wave held the lead for most of the third set and went up 21-18, but the Panthers came back and tied it at 21\. Dover went back up by two, but South won the final four points to complete the sweep. Both teams are off until next week, as South heads to Bedford on Monday while Dover hosts Salem on Wednesday.
