NASHUA - Josh Tripp watched a lot of film during the week leading up to the Nashua High School South football team's season opener against Bishop Guertin.

So with the game on the line in overtime, the junior had a good feeling of where the ball was going to go.

Tripp was right and got his hand on the pass from Cardinals' quarterback Nathan Bowen, knocking it away and giving South a 21-15 win in overtime in a Division I West Conference game at Stellos Stadium.

"We’ve been watching film on them all week," Tripp said. "We know their pass concepts and know they were coming across the middle. I just sat in my window and waited for the ball."

It was one of several big plays on both sides of the ball for Tripp, who also caught both of the Panthers' touchdowns from quarterback Cody Jackson in the first half. The first of those came on South's opening possession, an 11-play, 64-yard drive that put the Panthers up 8-0.

"He’s an unbelievable athlete," South coach Scott Knight said of Tripp. "We can score. We have some dudes. You’re going to see us some weeks where we’re more successful than that. We’ve got to eliminate the penalties. We had over 60 yards of penalties in the first half."

South (1-0, No. 10 in the NHHSSports Coaches Poll) was called for eight penalties in the first half, all but one a hold or a false start.

The Cardinals (0-1) were able to take advantage of the Panthers' miscues, finding the end zone on a 17-yard touchdown pass from Bowen to Cole Reeves with 23 seconds left in the first half.

But Bishop Guertin opened the second half on the verge of disaster. Two personal fouls on the Cardinals' opening drive gave the Panthers the ball at the Bishop Guertin 12-yard line.

South was called for a false start before the first play, and on third down, Jackson was sacked for a 7-yard loss. Jackson's pass for Justin Fish on fourth down was incomplete, giving the Cardinals the ball back with no damage done.

"We played behind the chains the whole first half," Knight said. "Then we get great field position down here (to start the second half) and it’s already first and 15\. You can’t be doing that stuff."

Bishop Guertin responded with a 19-play, 76-yard drive that ate up 9:34 and ended seven seconds into the fourth quarter on a 4-yard touchdown run by AJ Holmes.

"We had a lot of fight in us," Bishop Guertin coach Anthony Nalen said. "They didn’t turtle up and quit when they got punched in the mouth. They did a good job in the first half of stopping that run. We knew that eventually we’d be able to get some yards after contact which we didn’t get in the first half. We just went back to the well and kept trying it."

And then the rain came, putting a damper on both offenses. It finally let up as Bishop Guertin began a final drive with a chance for the win. The Cardinals drove down to the South 22-yard line, taking a final timeout with 1.8 left on the clock.

Bowen lined up to attempt a 29-yard field goal for the win, but the kick was just wide to the left, sending the game to overtime.

South got the ball first, and on third down from the 4-yard line, Fish went around the right side and snuck into the end zone near the pylon for the Panthers. The conversion failed to keep it a six-point game.

The Cardinals picked up four yards on first down, but one on second and tried to throw to the end zone twice. Bowen's pass on third down fell incomplete before Tripp came up with the deflection on fourth down.
