Side by side, some of the numbers from Friday's high school football game between Nashua South and Nashua North don't look all that different.

The Titans actually held a slight edge in plays (74-68) and time of possession (24:25-22:53), and outgained the Panthers in the first half by almost 40 yards.

But in the second half, South was able to do more with its opportunities, and made big plays on both sides of the ball to keep North from getting anything going in a 34-15 win. The Panthers had six plays of 20 yards or more in the second half on offense and held the Titans to an average of 2.9 yards per play after halftime.

"We had to rely on the big play and we didn’t make enough of them," North coach Dante Laurendi said. "We battled hard, but we were victims of their big plays in the second half."

It started on defense for South, with Devin Linscott intercepting a pass by North's Mike Loveless at the Panthers' 4-yard line after South had fumbled away the opening kickoff of the half. While the Panthers had a couple of long gains on the ensuing 10-play, 96-yard drive, they also came up with some clutch plays, converting on a third and fourth down to keep the possession going.

That possession ended in a 3-yard touchdown run by Jaylan Pacheco, and after forcing a punt, quarterback Sean Holland needed just two plays to pick up 67 yards and another touchdown. Pacheco added another touchdown later in the half on a 37-yard run that gave South a 27-15 lead, as the Panthers rushed for 232 yards after halftime.

"We did a real good job on the run," South coach Scott Knight said. "We like to run the ball a lot. If you can stop the run and run the football, you’re in good shape."

For the most part, the Panthers were able to stop the run, holding the Titans to 130 yards on the ground. RJ Jenkins had 75 of those yards, but it took him 23 carries to do so, an average of 3.3 yards per attempt, and 28 of them came on North's lone touchdown drive of the second half.

South put the game away on Alex Amigo's 38-yard pick-6 late in the fourth quarter, and lineman Nevan Roy also had an interception in the first half.

"Our defense is coming of age as of last week," Knight said.

Leading the way have been the guys up front, including Roy, Nathanael Tejeda and Derek Chiavelli on the defensive line, and Pacheco, Justin Arnesen and Saul Pascual at linebacker.

"Their front seven was very good," Laurendi said. "They tackled very well. They were squeezing the holes so there wasn’t much daylight and they played good, physical football."

After starting the season 0-2, the Panthers have evened their record to move into first in the West Conference, and South's next three opponents have a combined record of 2-10, starting with a home game against Timberlane on Friday.
