Nashua South's Josh Perry chases after teammate Collin Morrow during Thursday's practice.

The Nashua High School South gym felt cramped, and for boys lacrosse coach Bill Monsen, that's a good thing.

With the school's fields, and Stellos Stadium, not ready for use, Monsen's Panthers were inside for practice on Thursday and there was little room to move.

That's because there were 60 lacrosse players in the gym - double what the number was when Monsen took over four seasons ago - and that number could get a little higher after others complete physicals and paperwork.

But of that number, the Panthers have just five seniors, and only one of them saw varsity playing time a year ago. Despite that, South has plenty of experience.

"The experience is young," Monsen said. "The problem is that they were all freshmen and sophomores last year, but they have varsity games under their belt, they have playoff games under their belt. They've had to age quicker than most, which is starting to pay off now. You can see it in their demeanor and the way they've dedicated themselves to improving their physical ability in the offseason."

The Panthers were 6-9 a year ago and got the eighth seed in the Division I playoffs, losing to Pinkerton in the first round. Monsen believes there was plenty that happened last season for the Panthers to build on, even though South lost its top three scorers from a year ago.

"Because of the Mount Rushmore of Division I lacrosse that includes Pinkerton, Bishop Guertin, Hanover and Exeter, you really have to focus on taking it one day at a time," he said. "Any time we talk at practice, we focus on what would a great team do, and they know who I mean and who I'm talking about.

"They also know that last year, we were beating Hanover until the fourth quarter. We were holding our own against Pinkerton in the playoff game. Bishop Guertin was the only exception and that was the best they looked, I think, offensively all year."

South is scheduled to co-host a preseason jamboree with Nashua North on April 5, assuming the fields are available for use. The jamboree will also include Bishop Guertin, Concord, Goffstown and Spaulding, along with several teams from Maine and Vermont.
