NASHUA - For almost 37 minutes Friday night, it seemed every time the Nashua High School South boys basketball team tried to make a run, Nashua North had an answer.

But with the Titans just needing to make free throws to put the game away, their touch went away, and the Panthers were ready to take advantage.

North missed six of seven free throws, including the front end of three one-and-ones, in the final 74 seconds of regulation, and South tied the game with three seconds left before outscoring the Titans 12-6 in overtime to take a 57-51 win in the second game of a Division I varsity doubleheader at North.

Karsten Lemire scored 13 of his 15 points in the final three minutes of regulation and overtime to help the Panthers (7-7) get the win while Zachary Castonguay also had 15 points and Rhett Medling added nine points. Alex Hulfachor had two points for South, but they came on a driving layup that sent the game to overtime.

"You never get layups in varsity basketball like in your layup lines," South coach Nate Mazerolle said. "We talk about finishes, in the paint, we missed nine in the first half. Second half, we started getting to the basket and finishing. Karsten Lemire was immense in that second half and overtime, as was Rhett. We know the middle is locked down."

The Titans (9-3) finished with eight 3-pointers as a team and most of them seemed to come after the Panthers started to put something together on the offensive end. After South took a brief 8-6 lead in the first half, North outscored the Panthers 14-6 over the rest of the half and led by as many as 11 points early in the fourth quarter.

"South is a very talented team," said North assistant coach Chris Gaudreau, who was filling in for head coach Steve Lane. "When you get up, you know they are going to come back, you know they are going to make runs. Every time they made a run, we answered, right up until, unfortunately, they started putting us at the line."

Jack Peters led the Titans with 20 points, including three 3-pointers, while Thomas Laurendi had four 3s and 14 points and Trevor Labrecque added nine points. But North was just 5 of 15 from the line on the night.

The Titans led 34-23 in the first minute of the fourth quarter, but a 3 by Joshua Caruso was the start of a 6-0 run by the Panthers. But moments after a basket by Castonguay got South within five, Peters hit a 3 at the other end.

But the Panthers kept coming, making it a five-point game again on a 3 by Alize Roig-Cortes with 3:45 remaining, and again, Peters answered with a 3\. North led 44-39 when the Panthers started fouling to send the Titans to the line.

Jayden Montgomery and Derek Finlay each missed on the front of a one-and-one and South grabbed the rebound, but couldn't capitalize at the other end. With 52.4 seconds left, Labrecque went to the line for another one-and-one and was off the mark, and this time, South scored, getting a quick basket from Lemire.

Two more missed free throws by North led to a layup by Medling to make it a one-point game, and after Labrecque made one of two from the line with 16.1 seconds left, South had a chance to tie or win the game.

After a timeout, the Panthers moved the ball around quickly until Hulfachor found an open lane and drove in for the tying basket with 1.1 seconds left. North took a timeout and tried for a full-court pass on the inbounds, but the ball hit the netting above halfcourt, giving South the ball on its own baseline. Hulfachor got the inbounds pass and immediately put up a 3, but the shot was off the mark, sending the game to OT.

Medling opened the overtime with a three-point play and Lemire hit a pair of free throws to give South a 50-45 lead with 1:35 left, but Laurendi hit a 3 to cut the lead to two at the other end.

"In all of our years of coaching, I don’t know if we’ve had a more mentally tough team, so I felt good about (overtime)," Gaudreau said. "Unfortunately, they got that three-point play to start. Once Thomas banged that 3 and I called a timeout, we were still in it there. They made plays."

Lemire added a three-point play of his own, he and Medling each hit one of two free throws and Castonguay hit two of his own to put the game away for the Panthers.

"I told the kids as we went out for overtime that this would be a season-changing win, and it was," Mazerolle said. "We have the gauntlet left, but we got two out of three this week. That’s a big one."
