NASHUA - Nate Mazerolle had just one prediction leading up to Wednesday's championship game of the Chick-Fil-A Holiday Tournament: it wasn't going to be a blowout. And it almost didn't, as the Titans went on a 17-5 run to take its first lead since 2-0, with 2:08 to play. But North missed a few layups and South made its free throws - including four in a row by Mike Osgood after a technical foul - and came away with a 64-56 win. Osgood scored 15 points for South and was named the tournament's most valuable player, while DJ Frechette added 24 points, including four 3-pointers, and was also named to the all-tournament team, as was Zavier Williams (nine points). The title not only stretches South's tournament championship streak to four, but the Panthers have also won 13 straight games in the tournament since 2010. "What I take most from that is that we had that lead, gave up the lead, and then came back," Mazerolle said. "That's the one thing I take away from this game. At the end of the day, without being a downer, we're an 0-2 basketball team (in Division I). "We are young and inexperienced, and we made some young and inexperienced mistakes. They're a well-coached team and they're tough and it’s a rivalry game. It wasn't going to be a blowout." And it wasn't thanks to strong second-half performances from Brandon Rodriguez and Brennan Kastens, both of whom where also named to the all-tournament team. Rodriguez finished with 22 points, 15 in the second half, while Kastens scored all of his 17 after halftime. "I'm proud of the kids, they played well, but the South kids played well, too," North coach Steve Lane said. "We made an adjustment and cleared the side for Rodriguez and we cleared the post for one of our best post players (Kastens) and it was effective." Nate Hale also had 10 for the Titans, all in the first half, but that came after averaging 23.5 points in the first two games of the tournament. "Zavier did a really nice job on (Hale)," Mazerolle said. "I saw him play and I was scared. "First half, he hurt us, but second half, we tried to make some adjustments and I think we did a better job. They're a pick-your-poison kind of team because they have guys who can shoot it. Brennan Kastens is a tough, good basketball player and he hurt us in the fourth quarter." After North scored the first basket of the game, South went on an 11-0 run and took a 33-22 lead into halftime. The Titans cut the lead to nine early in the third quarter, but the Panthers got it back to double digits and led 45-34 on a jumper by Collin Morrow with 47.3 seconds left in the quarter. Kastens got a three-point play on the other end and Ronnie Silva added two free throws before the end of the quarter to make it a six-point game going into the final eight minutes. The Titans continued to chip away in the fourth, as North outscored the Panthers 12-5 over the first six minutes of the quarter to take a 51-50 lead. Rodriguez and Kastens combined for all 12 points for the Titans. "We kind of did it on the fly," Lane said of North's adjustments. "I said let's get the ball inside because Osgood has three fouls, and then he had four fouls, he was hesitant to play do, so we kept taking it at him. They chipped away and chipped away." The teams went back and forth on each ensuing possession until Rodriguez was fouled on a made layup with 50.2 seconds to go. The junior made the free throw to put North up 56-54. After a timeout, South answered, as Frechette hit a jumper to tie the game. North missed a layup at the other end, Ryan Penkala was fouled on the rebound and made both free throws to give South the lead, 58-56, with 32.3 remaining. North missed another layup and this time Osgood was fouled by Rodriguez on the rebound. Some shoving continued after the whistle and Rodriguez was given a technical foul. "We talk about it so often, and most of the time, I think it falls on deaf ears because we’re dealing with high school boys," Mazerolle said. "It's an exhibition game, but obviously, it's more than that. For us to keep our composure, it wasn't perfect, but we take that into our next game." Osgood made all four free throws to put South up 62-56 with 13.4 left and Frechette scored on the possession to put the game away. "I'm proud of the kids," Lane said. "For some of them, it's the first time experiencing a close game, adverse situations and they responded real well. Maybe we could have made a couple layups down the stretch when we were tied or up two (points). In the third-place game, Goffstown went on a 15-0 run in the second quarter to pull ahead of Alvirne and held on for a 61-56 win. The Grizzlies led 39-22 at halftime, but the Broncos got back in it in the second half, cutting the lead to single digits in the third. But every time, Goffstown had an answer. Marcus Haynes led Goffstown with 14 points while Tim Comeau and Mike Bailey each added 13 points. Alvirne got 14 points from Andrew Wetmore and Sam Bonney-Liles and Evan Hunt chipped in nine points apiece.
