The Panthers kept their hopes for a fifth-straight tournament championship alive Monday night by holding off Souhegan 55-52 in the final game of the day. DJ Frechette had a game-high 26 points and Kevin Genao added 11 points, but both missed free throws down the stretch that would have put the game out of reach for South. “You give up a lead in the fourth, you go down and then you go down again, and then we fought back,” South coach Nate Mazerolle said. “It wasn’t pretty. I was pleased with the fact that we fought, but we didn’t execute it well.” Souhegan, which led three times in the fourth quarter, including a one-point lead with 1:30 to play, struggled a little bit more, missing layups and turning the ball over. But the Sabers still had a chance to tie at the end, but a 3-pointer with three seconds left clanked off the front of the rim. Jerrell Webster led Souhegan with 22 points, as he went 9 of 12 from the free throw line, including 7 of 8 in the fourth quarter. Gabe Cruz was also in double figures for the Sabers with 11 points, but as a team, Souhegan was just 15 of 26 at the line – 6 of 14 not counting Webster. “We had our chances,” Souhegan coach Peter Pierce said. “We could have easily converted on half a dozen plays that were almost ... self-inflicted wounds. I’m happy with it. We’ll get better from here.” The Sabers got better as the game went on, as they fell behind 9-1 in the first quarter and didn’t make their first basket until 3:12 remained in the frame. But that started Souhegan on a 14-4 run that put the Sabers up 15-13 in the second quarter. “Last year, it would have been 25-5 and instead we took the lead in the first half,” Pierce said. “I was really pleased at that. We’ve got good senior leadership. The guys have done the work and it shows.” The teams combined for a dozen lead changes and just as many ties, with South taking a 29-28 lead into halftime, and Souhegan grabbing the lead back with a basket to open the third quarter. “They made some shots and I don’t think we got complacent,” Mazerolle said. “That’s the easy answer, but I don’t think that was it. The substitution pattern wasn’t the norm, that’s part of it, but that’s not on the kids who went in. They made shots and went to that zone and it took us a while to figure out what we needed to do against that.” A layup by Souhegan’s Anderson Geffard at the end of the third gave the Sabers a 38-37 lead going into the fourth. That lead went to 44-39 on two free throws by Ryan Boehm, but the Panthers answered by outscoring Souhegan 10-4 over the next three-plus minutes to take a 49-48 lead. Two free throws by Webster put the Sabers up 50-49 with 1:30 to play, but Frechette answered with a layup to give South a 51-50 lead. The South junior had a chance to stretch the lead to three, but missed two free throws, and Raj Gandhi made one of two at the other end for Souhegan to tie it at 51. Frechette broke the tie with a layup with 38.9 seconds left and a free throw by Zavier Williams put South up three, 54-51\. Souhegan called a timeout with 11.6 seconds left to set up a play, but South fouled Webster first, and the senior made the second of two free throws. Genao hit one of two at the other end to make it a three-point lead again, and Souhegan’s last-second shot to tie came up short.
