NASHUA - Wining may be the ultimate goal, coaches want to see their players progress throughout the course of a season.

Nashua North-Souhegan boys hockey coach John Coughlin is seeing that happen with his third line.

The unit played a big role Wednesday night, scoring the game-tying goal and shutting down Nashua South's top line in a 5-2 win for the Saber Titans that snapped an eight-game losing streak.

Norhegan got at least one goal from each of its lines, led by two tallies from James Wilson, and goalie Sean Chipman bounced back from a tough start to earn the win.

Wilson's first goal put the Saber Titans (2-9) up 2-1 in the second period and his second capped the team's scoring. Robbie Duarte added a goal and an assist while Cade Facey and Jeremiah Latham also scored.

South got goals from Tyler Goy, who scored on a shot from center ice just 36 seconds into the game, and Tony Colombus, who finished off the scoring with 1:55 left to play.

"I thought we played very well," Coughlin said. "I think the key to it was that our third unit has come along vastly since the beginning of the year. We're able to use them and they were a plus-one. Every time they got paired with (South's) first unit, they held their own."

That third line includes forwards Facey, Matty Eskensas and John Natale with defensemen Bobby Chisholm and Chris Constant. They tied the game when Facey collected a loose puck in front of the South goal and smacked it past goalie Nathan Radin to make it 1-1 at 6:22 of the first.

"They tied it up and it was like being at a funeral," South coach Shawn Connors said. "Everyone hung their head. It's hard to pull kids out of that.

"We had a rough go at it. I think we were playing a lot of slap-hockey. I don't know if it was the crowd, getting worked up, but they weren't looking where they were giving it. I think the nerves were getting to them and they were chasing the puck. It just didn't look like the way we normally play."

Both teams had chances in the second period, but when South’s Jacob Nottinger was sent off for an elbow, it was the opening Norhegan needed.

After the ensuing faceoff, Wilson skated with the puck near the blue line and flicked a shot toward the goal. Radin appeared to be screened and the shot found its way into the net to make 2-1 Saber Titans just 21 seconds into the power play.

"We were just trying to get as many shots as possible," Wilson said. "I saw an open lane and figured I might as well take it. That was big (having the lead) because I think it lead to our strong third period. It kept the moral up and amped us up in the locker room."

Norhegan took another one 1:27 later, when Evan Connors sent a pass from behind the goal to an open Latham, who beat Radin to make it 3-1\. At the other end, Chipman made a big save on a shot by South’s Bryan Connolly with 10 seconds left in the period.

"It was big for us tying it up at the end of one and then Chippy made that huge save at the end of the second," Coughlin said. "We go up 3-1 and their defenseman comes in and he made a nice blocker save. I think he was determined after that."

Duarte and Wilson scored goals 11 seconds apart in the third period to make it 5-1 with 2:14 left, and Colombus finished out the scoring with a goal 19 seconds later.
