GOFFSTOWN - For one half Saturday, it was feast or famine for the Nashua High School North football team on offense.

Fortunately for the Titans, there was a lot more feasting on defense.

While North's offense sputtered in the first half thanks to penalties in the first half against Goffstown, the defense stepped up and kept the Titans in the game. So when North finally found some consistency in the second half, it was able to run away with a 48-22 win over the Grizzlies in Division I action.

The Titans were penalized eight times for 63 yards in the first half, but held a 14-6 lead at halftime thanks to a pair of long touchdowns from Curtis Harris and Austin Ouellette, and a defense that forced three turnovers.

North (1-1) had just two fouls in the second half, while Harris finished with 194 yards rushing and three touchdowns, and Ouellette had three catches for 89 yards and a touchdown to go with two interceptions on defense. As a team, North was plus-five in turnovers, picking off Goffstown quarterback Charlie Keith four times.

"We started off really sloppy and very undisciplined," North coach Dante Laurendi said. "There was a lack of focus and we were able to get that back in the second half. Defense bailed us out in a lot of situations with turnovers, so that kept us in the game thankfully. We were able to take advantages of some of those breaks, but you can’t play like that."

Mike Loveless added two rushing touchdowns for the Titans and was 8 of 12 passing for 140 yards and the touchdown pass to Ouellette. Harris also had three catches for 46 yards and scored on touchdown runs of 41, 54 and 6 yards. For the second week in a row, he lined up all over the field on offense, either in the backfield, in the slot or taking the snap.

"He’s a heck of an athlete and they do a really good job with him," Goffstown coach Justin Hufft said. "They mix up the positions that he plays and I like the way they do that. It’s hard to zero in on him and keep on him when he’s lined up all over the place. We knew where he was and we had plans on stopping him, but having plans and actually stopping him are different things."

The Grizzlies got a mixed showing from Keith, who ran for 51 yards and was 11 of 21 passing for 178 yards and two touchdowns, but also had four interceptions. Jarrett Henault, Ben Dodge and Michael Levesque each caught a touchdown pass for Goffstown.

Goffstown opened the game with an 11-play, 63-yard drive, capped by Keith's 9-yard scoring pass to Henault. The missed point after left it a 6-0 lead for the Grizzlies with 7:43 left in the first quarter.

North opended the ensuing drive with a false start and an illegal shift, but on second and 17, Loveless hit Ouellette on screen pass for a 37-yard gain. A hold on the Titans followed by a 3-yard loss on a pass from Loveless to Brian Montminy gave North a second-and-23, but Harris broke free for a 47-yard touchdown run.

"We were able to hit some chunk plays, but we had to overcome deep down and distances," Laurendi said. "We caught a break there, but you’re not going to make a living with that. We can’t put ourselves in that hole, but we were able to respond. The defense bailed us out with key stops and turnovers."

Loveless went deep to Ouellette for a 43-yard touchdown for the Titans and a 14-6 lead with 39.2 seconds left in the first quarter. That's where it stood at halftime, and three plays into the second half, Harris raced 54 yards for his second score of the day.

Goffstown was able to answer on a third-and-12 play at North's 47, as Keith hit Dodge over the middle, and the two-point conversion run by Josh Juneau made it 21-14.

But the Grizzlies' next two possessions ended in interceptions, and North was able to capitalize on both, finding the end zone off each one to take control of the game.

"I’m proud of how we came out," Hufft said. "The kids had a good week of practice, and I thought we came ready to play. We really played well early on, but as the game wore on, eventually, second half, North was a little too much for us."
