The Titans had run four more plays, the Panthers had gained eight more yards, and the new scoreboard at Stellos Stadium said the teams were tied 6-6. But in the second half, North won the battle that usually decides a close game - turnovers. South lost three fumbles in the second half, the first two turning into 10 points for North, and the last of which cemented a 21-14 win for the Titans in a Division I West Conference game. Sherod Williams recovered two of the fumbles and forced one of them when he sacked South quarterback Dante Young early in the third quarter to set North up at the Panthers' 19-yard line. Down 14-6, the turnover swung momentum, as Brian Montminy scored on a 3-yard run five plays later for the Titans. South's Brendon Frost fumbled near midfield on its next drive, and Williams was there to recover it again. North was able to turn it into a 24-yard field goal by Sam Nicholls that made it 15-14 Titans with 10:16 left to play. "We needed it," North coach Dante Laurendi said. "We had a couple of forced ones and we had a couple of unforced ones, which, we’ll take what we can get. That gave us some momentum and we were able to make some plays off that, and get back into the game." Curtis Harris led the Titans (4-1) with 163 yards rushing and a touchdown on 21 carries, while Isaac Smith had 91 yards on eight carries, including a 49-yard touchdown run with 1:52 left that gave North a seven-point lead. Nicholls extra point was wide left to keep it a 21-14 game, but on South's first play on the next possession, Jaylan Pacheco fumbled and the Titans recovered to secure the win. "In a close game like this, you can’t turn the ball over," South coach Scott Knight said. "Those are the kind of things that will lose these games. There are other things we did wrong, but the stats will tell you, you can’t turn it over." Pacheco finished with 96 yards on 10 carries, as he gave the Panthers (2-3) a 14-6 lead on South's first drive of the second half, scoring on an 11-yard run and then adding a two-point conversion. North responded by moving the ball down to the South 21-yard line, but the Titans turned it over on downs, one of three times on the night that North had a drive end inside the Panthers' 35-yard line. But two plays later, Williams hit Young as he was about to pass and the ball went backward. Harris had the first shot at the fumble and Williams came in to pounce on the ball. "He made some big plays for us," Laurendi said of Williams, who also had a sack late in the fourth quarter to end a South drive. Montminy's touchdown made it a two-point game, and that's where it stayed when South's defense stopped Harris on the conversion attempt. South looked like it might answer on the ensuing drive, overcoming a second-and-21 at their own 38 to get a first down at the North 42\. But Frost couldn't handle a toss from Young and Williams was there to make the recovery at midfield. The Titans had a second-and-goal at the Panthers 2, but a hold pushed them back and North settled for the field goal by Nicholls. "We needed something," Laurendi said. "We had a pretty good drive and then we had the penalty. We wanted to come away with some points instead of throwing up a desperation pass or something long. That was a good momentum shift." The Titans were on the verge of putting the game away, facing a third-and-3 at the South 24 on their next possession. But another hold pushed them back and North ended up turning it over on downs, giving the Panthers the ball at their own 35 with 4:41 to play. On first down, Pacheco got free for a 21-yard gain to the North 44-yard line, but South tried to go to the air after that, and on fourth down, Young was sacked by Williams, giving the Titans the ball at their own 43\. Three plays later, Smith found an opening and raced through the Panthers' defense for the clinching touchdown. "We had decent field position," Knight said. "We busted a trap and then sputtered again. We had a couple of chances. (If it works) we’re looking back going ‘that was a great play call.’" Young finished 8 of 17 passing for 117 yards, including a 43-yard touchdown to Frost in the first quarter that made it 6-0\. Frost finished with four catches for 67 yards while David Barnett added four catches for 50 yards. Montminy finished with 33 yards rushing and a touchdown for North while quarterback Mike Loveless added 64 yards on 11 carries.
