NASHUA – The Nashua High School North boys lacrosse team scored four goals in the fourth quarter Saturday and thwarted a late threat by Nashua South to win 10-9 at Stellos Stadium.

Jake Genest scored three goals and Spencer Petz made 15 saves, including a couple in the final minutes, to help the Titans (3-5) snap a five-game losing streak. That included a 15-10 loss to previously winless Concord last Thursday that had coach Keith Bertrand disappointed in his team.

Nashua North's Jake Genest scored three goals in Saturday's win over Nashua South.

“Thursday was probably one of the worst loses I’ve had since taking over the program,” Bertrand said. “We did not play well at all. The end of that game, it kind of got away from us a little bit. To come back out on a day like this, to get a W over our heated rivals.

“I was hoping that (Saturday), with the rivalry being what it is, they would come out and play hard. They played unbelievably hard.”

The Titans also got two goals and an assist from Jon Searles and Tom Haller. Adam Murphey also scored twice as North came back from a two-goal deficit twice in the third quarter. South was up 7-6 going into the final 12 minutes, but North scored twice in the first three-plus minutes of the fourth to take the lead.

South needed just 15 seconds to tie the game back up, but the Titans went ahead for good with 6:11 left and Murphey scored the game-winner with 4:14 to play. Steve Saucier got South (1-4) within a goal with 3:36 left, but the Panthers couldn’t tie the game, despite possessing the ball for most of the rest of the game.

“We wanted to use the fact that they were paying attention (Dan Auger),” South coach Bill Monsen said. “We wanted him away from the ball to start and then circle him back and depending if they followed him was what we did next.”

Auger had two goals and an assist for the Panthers while Louis Alexanian had three goals and Wes Cunningham added two more scores.

South got solid goaltending from Brian McKinley (14 saves), including some big ones early in the game, but Monsen wasn’t happy with the way the Panthers played.

“We got outcoached, outhustled and outplayed,” Monsen said. “I think we were, honestly, out of our element all game. I don’t know what the problem was, or what the funk was, or why we played the way we did.

“We have not played this hesitant all year. We were stagnant on offense. I think maybe the moment was a little too big. We have a lot of young players and maybe they were waiting on Auger or (Patrick) Goff to do something.”

Both teams return to action Monday, as North hosts Manchester Central while South heads to Salem.
