NASHUA – The Nashua High School North boys lacrosse team didn’t have its best for most of Saturday’s game against Merrimack.

But the Titans hung around, and when they finally put everything together, North was able to pull out a win.

Three times the Titans rallied and Sean Holmes scored the game-winner with 1:03 left in the game to give North an 11-10 win over the Tomahawks.

Holmes finished with three goals for the Titans (2-0), who trailed 3-1 in the first quarter, 7-4 in the second quarter and 10-7 going into the fourth. But North held Merrimack scoreless over the final 12 minutes of the game to pull out the win.

“That’s what I like about this team, they don’t quit and they grind it out,” North coach Keith Bertrand said. “No matter who you play, if you’re not playing well, good teams find a way to win. We knew we didn’t have our fastball (Saturday), but we kept grinding it out. We won the game on ground balls and loose ball situations.”

Adam Murphy, Tom Haller (assist) and Billy Loranger each had two goals for the Titans, while Jake Genest had a goal and two assists, including one on the game-winner.

“I give certain guys green lights and we don’t have to call any offense, I just tell them to go,” Bertrand said. “Jake Genest could take the defenseman and that’s what he did. Sean Holmes cut back and it was right there. They’ve been in that situation before, so when it came, they knew what to do. (Holmes) caught it with his right hand, brought it to his left side and backhanded it in.”

Mac Martin led Merrimack (0-2) with four goals and two assists, while Matt Brewster had two goals and Dalton Paquette, Remy Watt (assist), Connor MacInnis (assist) and Connor Cyr each had a goal. Robby Todd made 20 saves, giving him 42 in Merrimack’s first two games of the season.

“He does a good job and we hung him out to dry a couple of times with some really poor decisions,” Merrimack coach Brian Miller said. “Frustrating loss for sure. You have a three-goal lead on a team, you like to be able to keep that and pull out a win.”

But the ’Hawks struggled to keep possession in the second half, thanks to nine penalties.

“I don’t know how many man-up goals they scored, but when you spend that much time without the ball, you can’t expect to be in a favorable position and win the game,” Miller said. “I thought at times we played well, and at times we hurt ourselves with unforced turnovers. We threw the ball at guys’ feet and weren’t making smart decisions with the ball.”

Despite that, Merrimack had a chance to take the lead at the end. North scored two goals in 16 seconds early in the fourth quarter, the second coming from Genest with 10:32 left in the game to make it 10-9.

Loranger tied the game 10-10 with 6:44 left and that’s where it stood with 3:39 left, when the ’Hawks called timeout with possession in the North end.

But Merrimack’s first shot went over everything, and the second hit the side of the net and the Titans recovered. North took a timeout with 3:04 left, and after Todd made a couple of saves, Genest found Holmes open in front of the net for the winner.

“We came out of the gates and defensively, we weren’t sharp at all,” Bertrand said. “Offensively, we were trying to score two goals every possession.

“About midway through the third quarter is when we started to put our game together. They didn’t score any goals in the fourth. Our defense played exceptionally well, we made good decisions with the ball and our lacrosse IQ in the fourth was excellent. We ground a win out.”
