NASHUA - When the Division I tournament pairings are released, it's a safe bet the Nashua High School North boys basketball team will be credited with a full win for Tuesday night's victory over Manchester Memorial.

All wins might be created equal when the regular season is done, but this one looked a little different for the Titans.

Down two starters, North took an early lead, gave it up, and after battling back in the second half, held off the Crusaders in the final minute to secure a 56-51 win. It was the 10th win in a row for the Titans (13-1), who kept pace with Bedford in the D1 standings, as both are a game behind first-place Pinkerton.

"I’m glad we got a win, don’t get me wrong, but we’ve got a lot to improve," North coach Steve Lane said. "Things we usually hang our hat on, taking care of the basketball and making some free throws in key situations. I know some of the kids involved in the rotation now are not comfortable yet with their role, but they are still varsity players and they have to take care of the ball."

The Titans turned the ball over 18 times, 11 in the first half, as Memorial (4-8) led by as many as seven points before taking a 27-26 lead into halftime. But after the break, North's two healthy seniors took over the game.

Jayden Montgomery had eight of his game-high 19 points in the first three minutes of the second half to help the Titans open the quarter on an 11-3 run. Jack Peters added all seven points after halftime and had big plays on the boards and defensively, including a block on 3-point attempt by Memorial's Devin Lavallee that could have tied the game with about 15 seconds remaining.

Robinson Rodriguez and Parth Miglani added nine points apiece for the Titans, including two free throws by Miglani in the final seconds to put the game away. North could have done that earlier, but struggled at the free throw line, going 7 of 17 on the night.

Memorial wasn't any better, as the Crusaders shot 4 of 14 from the line while turning the ball over 14 times, as they also played with three new starters in the lineup due to administrative decisions.

"We came ready to play and we played up to our competition," Memorial coach Danny Bryson said. "We had them on the ropes. We were two possessions away from tying the game. We played with a lot of heart. I challenged those guys. We’re without three starters. We played well."

The Crusaders got 15 points from Abdalha Ramadhani and 14 points from Kellen Kay, including four 3-pointers. Bory Bory added eight points and Christian Bilolo had six.

North got out to a 6-0 lead just 1:13 into the game, but Memorial answered with a 13-0 run that included five points from Kay and four from Bilolo.

"I think that’s what our guys thought, that Memorial would just go away," Lane said. "Coach Bryson does too good of a job and those kids play pretty hard. They weren’t going to go away and we soon found that out. They were in for a fight for the whole night."

Memorial took a 15-10 lead into the second quarter and was up 21-15 midway through the frame, but a quick 7-0 run by the Titans put them in front by one. The teams traded the lead four times in the final 3:30 of the half, with the Crusaders taking a one-point advantage into halftime.

Montgomery wasted little time putting North in front in the third quarter, scoring back-to-back baskets in the opening minute and then adding two more around a 3-pointer by Ramadhani. Miglani added a 3 for the Titans to make it an 11-3 run and a 37-30 lead, and force a timeout from Memorial.

Kay hit a pair of 3s to keep the Crusaders close, but a three-point play and a steal and score by Peters gave North a 44-36 lead with 1:05 remaining in the third.

"Jayden Montgomery and Jack Peters, the two seniors that are healthy at this point, played great in the second half," Lane said. "If it wasn’t for them, we probably wouldn’t have gotten over the hump. All the credit goes to those seniors."

But Memorial had an answer, getting a three-point play from Bory and a putback by Thomas Stamoulis in the final minute to make it 44-41 North to end the third.

"They were able to gather themselves and make it a game," Bryson said. "We kept it close. They went up and we were able to chip it away."

The Titans got the lead back up to seven, 50-43, with 4:50 remaining, but the Crusaders kept it close, cutting it to three points twice, including 54-51 with 1:04 to go. Bryson used his final timeout after that and Memorial started sending North to the free throw line with 29.7 seconds remaining.

But with the Titans in the double bonus, Miglani missed both free throws and the Crusaders got the rebound. After moving the ball around, Lavallee attempted a 3, but Peters got a hand on it and Adrian Lazo came down with the rebound before getting fouled.

Lazo missed both free throws at the other end, but after Memorial was able to get the ball to Kay, both Peters and Lazo challenged the shot, and Miglani grabbed the loose ball and was fouled. This time, he made both free throws to put the game out of reach.

"I didn’t want to foul (Miglani) though, but he missed two, and then Devin (Lavallee) got blocked in the corner," Bryson said. "I was trying to run a quick-hitter play and then it gets loud in here. If we had one more timeout, maybe we can draw something up and get a better look than we did."
