Standing on the tracks Saturday night in Manchester was 10th-seeded Trinity. The 15th-seeded Titans (8-12) followed up Wednesday’s first-round upset of top-seeded Manchester Central with a 57-56 win over the Pioneers (9-11) in Saturday’s Division I boys basketball quarterfinals. The win gives North a spot in the final four, with the Titans facing third-seeded Pinkerton Academy in Wednesday’s 6 p.m. semifinal at the University of New Hampshire in Durham. Trailing by one point with one minute remaining in regulation, Trinity called a timeout to set up a plan for the final shot. When the Pioneers finally got the ball in play and down low, Titans’ center Ricky Constant was waiting. With the ball in the hands of Trinity senior guard Luke Testa just to the right of the basket, the 6-foot-5 North senior stepped out of the paint, left his feet, stretched out as far as he could, and denied the shot with 6.3 seconds remaining – sealing the Titans’ victory. “I was just following the ball and I saw he got a little off balance,” Constant said. “I just went up trying to stop the ball and was able to get a hand on it. “In that situation, when the ball hits your hand, I’m just trying to knock it down so they can’t get another shot off.” It was a dramatic ending for a capacity crowd in Trinity’s gymnasium. Thirty-plus spectators were turned away at the door just before tip-off, with a few more were denied access as the first half played on, as Trinity fell behind then did all it could to get within striking distance as time expired. "It is what it is," Lane said. "We're playing with some inexperienced kids. Some kids who are not used to playing in this kind of situation. Things happen. That's a good team we were playing over there. They're not going to quit. They're going to keep playing. They're going to keep going at it. Then they close the gap, close the gap, and a couple big turnovers down the stretch for us. But a key defensive play by Ricky, and that's all I remember." Leading by nine at the half, North held its ground through the third quarter holding Trinity in check and taking the floor for the fourth quarter with a 10-point advantage. That’s when the Pioneers’ defense stepped up, and their offense capitalized. Trinity held North’s leading scorers, Brandon Rodriguez (17 points) and Nathan Hale (14 points), to a combined seven points in the final frame, allowing the Pioneers to work their way back within six with 1:26 to play and one with a minute left on the clock courtesy of a 3-pointer by their leading-scorer Justin Trickett (20 points). The Pioneers did get out to an early 9-6 lead, but 3-pointers from Hale and Constant gave the Titans their first lead. The first quarter went back and forth until North’s Alejandro Jones closed with a basket for a 20-17 lead. A lead they Titans would never relinquish. North opened the second quarter on a 14-4 run, highlighted by a Hale 3-pointer to end the first seven point spurt and a Brendan Barrett 3-pointer to close the run for a 34-21 lead with 1:05 remaining in the first half. With a 34-25 advantage at halftime, and a 48-38 lead entering the fourth quarter, it looked like the Titans were well on their way to the semifinals. Testa, Trickett and Connor Walsh would have none of that as the Pioneers closed to within five (48-43) with 5:18 remaining on a pair of Testa free throws. After trading a few baskets, Trickett, who scored nine of his game-high 20 in the fourth quarter, would score two straight buckets to bring Trinity within four (55-51) with 1:48 remaining. Rodriguez drained two from the charity stripe to push North back up by six (57-51) with 1:26 remaining only to watch Walsh (11 points) drain two free throws of his own on the other end with 1:18 remaining to get the Pioneers back within four (57-53). Trickett’s 3-pointer then created a one-point gap and Constant’s game-saving block kept the Titans chugging toward Durham.
