NASHUA – The Bishop Guertin and Nashua North high school football teams spent last Friday on the field at Stellos Stadium for a scrimmage.

The next time the two teams put the pads on and line up against each other, it will count.

When the NHIAA realigns football into three divisions – with four conferences in each division – the Titans and Cardinals will become conference rivals, along with Nashua South, Alvirne and Keene.

That means, among other things, both teams are going to have to find another team to scrimmage.

“We’ll have to revisit our scrimmage schedule,” North coach Jason Robie said. “It might be something you have to hold off on until you see the regular season schedule.”

Bishop Guertin coach Travis Cote is looking forward to getting to play both North and South in games that count in 2013.

“I think it will be great for the city of Nashua and for the kids,” he said. “Hopefully, you’ll end up with more people at the games. It should develop into a good situation for all of us. I think it will be good.”

While there will likely be something that need to be worked out in the new alignment, Robie believes it’s something that will stick for now.

“I think this is what people have been asking for,” he said. “There are some things that will be tweaked. I think it will make some good football matches and bring some excitement, a new excitement, because you’re not playing the same teams.”

### More pressure?

While the Cardinals are coming off their fourth straight Division II championship, it’s just the first title under Cote. Winning in his first season has made the head coach feel a little bit of pressure going into his second at Bishop Guertin.

“I think there’s more pressure this year,” Cote said. “Last year, it was the first year taking over a team that has been traditionally successful. Now this year, the expectations are that it’s going to happen again.”

One positive for the Cardinals this year is that the returning players are familiar with Cote’s system and style of coaching.

“We’re coming along quicker because the kids are familiar with the system on both sides of the ball,” he said. “Things are definitely progressing quicker than they did. I think the division is going to be very strong this year. It’s going to be tough to come back (and win it all).”

### Young again

When Robie and his coaching staff were giving out practice jerseys for this year, they decided to give the seniors blue shirts, and everyone else white shirts. There were a lot more white shirts on the field against Bishop Guertin.

“We have a lot of young kids playing football right now,” Robie said. “A lot of these kids were playing freshmen ball a year ago. The game is a little faster. There’s more teaching and technique. We had a pretty productive summer in the weight room. We’re right on par, and that’s a credit to our kids and our coaches. They’re doing the things they’re supposed to be doing.”

Even with the small senior class, Robie feels that group – anchored by four captains – is going to provide North with some valuable leadership.

“Our senior leadership to this point has been tremendous,” he said. “We only have four captains, but every single senior has shown leadership.”
