NASHUA -The Nashua High School South boys basketball team knew it was going to have to run to keep up with Moore Catholic on Wednesday, but through one quarter, it was the Panthers dictating the pace.

South took a 20-13 lead into the second quarter and promptly stopped running. The result was a 56-43 loss to the Mavericks in a second-round game at the Chick-fil-A Holiday Tournament at Nashua North.

The Panthers scored just 23 points in the final three quarters, including none over the final 5:30 of the game.

"They beat us down the floor a few times and we knew they would do that. We figured we were going to have to sprint in both directions," South coach Nate Mazerolle said. "In the first quarter, we did. Second quarter and beyond, we stopped running in each direction. We struggled running the offense. We just didn’t execute and that was frustrating because we’ve worked on it time and time again."

The Panthers got 15 points from Anthony Muccioli and 14 points from Jared Maloney. Moore Catholic's Mark Fiorello led all scorers with 16 points, including four 3-pointers, and Scott Schaefer added 14 points and was 6-for-8 from the free throw line.

Fiorello's 3-pointer just before the halftime buzzer gave the Mavericks their first lead, 27-24, going into the break, but South opened the second half by scoring six of the first eight points to take a 30-29 lead.

That lead proved to be short-lived, but the Panthers stayed close for the rest of the quarter and trailed by two going into the fourth. Two baskets by Nilsson Basora and one by Maloney tied the game at 43, but the scoring ended their for South.

Moore Catholic closed the game on a 13-0 run to advance to the tournament championship game.

"They did a nice job of clogging the middle," Mazerolle said. "They controlled tempo. They run when they’re supposed to and they execute."

The Mavericks will take on Thornton Academy in the final at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. South will face Bedford in the third-place game at 6 p.m.
