PELHAM - It was gross all around. The sun beat down on the earth from start to finish and the humidity made the air soupy and dense.

Both the Monadnock and Pelham high school boys lacrosse teams were running on fumes, and it was the Huskies that had enough to get to the finish and hold on for a 6-5 upset victory in the Division III boys lacrosse quarterfinals.

The sixth-seeded Huskies avenged a regular loss to third-seeded Pelham from back on May 16.

Neither team scored in the first, and Monadnock (9-6) was the one to find its groove before half. The Huskies opened up a 3-0 lead going into the halftime break on the back of a pair of goals from Chris Boucher.

“Running that ISO from X really stretched the defense out upfield,” Boucher said. “It let us dodge from X and wait for that slide that sometimes didn’t come. If it did, just dump it off and get a shot from up top.”

Dominic Dow had the third goal of the quarter and added his second just 27 seconds into the third quarter to open up a 4-0 lead. Dow finished with three goals and an assist.

“Dom’s got one of the hardest shots on the team,” Monadnock coach Rob Hart said. “When he’s putting them on net they’re coming hard and fast.”

It wasn't until there were eight minutes gone in the third that Pelham (12-2) finally got on the board thanks to a goal from Freddy Stamatatos.

From there the fourth quarter was a mad dash with the Pythons throwing everything they could at Monadnock goalie Cullen Lloyd and the Huskies defense. Stamatatos led the charge with a hat trick and fellow senior Rob Ryan added a goal and an assist as well.

The Pythons got the score to 4-3 and 6-5 but couldn’t find the tying goal. Pelham had the game’s final shot, but a Monadnock defender blocked it at the horn to preserve the victory.

Lloyd turned aside eight shots including two in the fourth quarter. Pelham goalie Jackson Snyder made 11 saves.

Pelham controlled ground balls 28-19 and dominated faceoffs 10-4, but the Pythons were minus-3 in turnovers which killed multiple Pelham possessions.

“Obviously you don’t want to be down, but things happen,” Pelham assistant coach Gary Dempsey said. “We got a goal and once that happened things started to move for us a little bit better. It comes down to confidence. Whoever’s winning has the confidence. We’re down (four) goals so we have no confidence. Once we got a few that started to change.”

The win snaps a four-game losing streak for the Huskies and send them to their second state semifinal in as many seasons. Monadnock will face Laconia on Wednesday.
