DURHAM - Chandler Matson knows that Isaac Jasinski is more than just the kicker for the Monadnock Regional High School football team.

But on Saturday, that's all the Huskies needed him to be.

Jasinski kicked a 27-yard field goal with one second left on the clock to give No. 1 Monadnock a 15-12 win over No. 3 Campbell in the Division III championship game at the University of New Hampshire.

The kick capped a comeback for the Huskies, who trailed 12-0 in the first half, and struggled at times to move the ball against the Cougars' defense. But when it came to crunch time, Monadnock (12-0) put itself in position to win and found a way to capture the elusive championship.

"Every year, we’ve gone one step further," Matson said. "Freshmen year was quarter(finals) and done, sophomores was semis and done, last year was championship and lost. We had one goal in mind and one outcome that we would except, and that was this right here."

Monadnock outgained Campbell (9-3) 236-134, but ran 30 more plays than the Cougars and had the ball for 34:35, as the Huskies defense was dominant.

But two lost fumbles by quarterback Tim Santaw on each of Monadnock's first two possessions helped set up a 24-yard touchdown run by Campbell's Connor Sweeney, and on the second play of the second quarter, Sweeney broke free for a 78-yard scoring jaunt that put the Cougars, who were without leading rusher Keegan Mills, in front by two touchdowns.

Monadnock's Cole Jarvis hauls in a touchdown catch as Campbell's Hunter Caron defends.

After beating Campbell by 22 points during the regular season, Matson thought Huskies might have gone into the final with a little less focus than they needed.

"We came in a little too … I don’t want to say we thought we deserved it, but we got hit in the mouth," he said. "We didn’t expect for it to be a dog fight like it was. We thought back too much to a couple of weeks ago when we played them.

"Defensively, we’re doing all right, they just had those two big plays. I put a lot of that on myself. I didn’t set edges tight enough and let people get passed me. Other than that, they weren’t moving the ball that effectively on us."

Matson finished with 77 yards on 22 carries, while Santaw added 49 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries and Tim Hart had 45 yards on 21 attempts. Santaw was also 3 of 7 passing for 65 yards with a 32-yard touchdown pass to Cole Jarvis that got Monadnock on the board before halftime.

"Boy did we play like crap, and we’re down one score," Monadnock coach Ryan Avery said of his message at the break. "We play better and everything will take care of itself.

"They switched some things up and went some different ways, kind of confused out guys to start with a little bit and how to block it."

Down 12-6 going into the third quarter, Monadnock picked up some momentum when Jasinski's short kickoff to start the half landed near the sideline between two Campbell players. Tyler Stone was the first to the live ball, giving the Huskies a first down at the Cougars 43.

But Campbell's defense would hold, forcing the ball over on downs. The Cougars offense couldn't do much in the third quarter, as they went three-and-out twice.

With 5:18 left in the third, Monadnock took over at its own 32 and started driving. Facing a fourth-and-2 at the Campbell 43, Santaw scrambled for three yards to get the first down.

Four plays later, the Huskies again faced a fourth down, needing six yards to keep the drive going. This time, Santaw found Hart over the middle for a 23-yard gain to the Campbell 13\. Two after that, on the first snap of the fourth quarter, Santaw kept the ball and went outside for a 12-yard touchdown run.

After going for two after its first touchdown, Monadnock elected to kick to try to take the lead, but Jasinski's attempt was blocked, keeping it a 12-12 game with 11:54 remaining.

The Huskies tried another short kick, but this time, were called for kick-catch interference, giving Campbell the ball at the Monadnock 35-yard line. A 10-yard run by Adam Breton gave the Cougars a first down - their only one of the second half - at the 23-yard line.

But Monadnock's defense held and Chad Martel's 37-yard field goal attempt was blocked by Joey Joslyn. After neither team could move the ball on their next possession, the Huskies took over with 4:57 left at their own 28.

Monadnock's running game ate up the clock, as Santaw, Matson and Hart carried the ball on all 17 plays, picking up five first downs, which included two fourth-and-1s. On third-and-6 at the Campbell 10, Avery brought in Jasinski to attempt the game-winning kick and the senior put it just inside the left upright.

"I knew he had it in him," Santaw said. "I looked at him and said ‘we need this from you’ and he said ‘I got it.’ It was like a regular kick in practice and he booted it right through."
