# Milford's Andrews showcasing soccer skills at the professional level

Morgan Andrews may be far from her hometown Milford this fall, as she completes her degree at USC, but when she’s playing at the pro level, the soccer star finds herself close to home.

After helping the Trojans win a national championship during her final year, the now Boston Breakers star forward is one of the key pieces to the National Women’s Soccer League club.

Growing up, Andrews had to make her soccer mark in a state where the sport isn’t as well known.

“The soccer community is small in New Hampshire,” she said. “It’s cliche, but it really is a big family. When I was young I went to the Rising Stars in Bedford, I was really close with the owners and trainers. After school I would go there and train until midnight, and play with the high school boys teams.”

Andrews jumped over to the Hampshire Hills facility in Milford where she would also practice while playing in high school.

While playing for the Spartans, Andrews was named the 2012-13 Gatorade National High School Athlete of the Year before heading to Notre Dame. In four seasons at Milford, she netted 114 goals and 53 assists. She started every game from freshman year on, and served as a captain in her senior season.

In that season, Andrews tallied 31 goals and 18 assists and led Milford to a Division II title, even though she missed time due to playing for the US Under 20 national team.

Drafted third overall in 2017, Andrews has had a solid rookie campaign in Boston. The Milford native hasn’t always been able to play in front of friends and family in college, but that opportunity has been presented to her at the pro level.

Playing at the pro level is something a lot of women in sports don’t even get the opportunity to aspire to, but it’s something Andrews has always had her eyes on.

“It’s absolutely been a goal since day one,” she said. “With so many women’s leagues folded and moving around, sometimes it’s difficult, but I always wanted to make a career out of this. It’s worth going through the trouble to make it to play in that environment.”

Even now that she’s a pro with the Breakers, there are still challenges Andrews, and all athletes in the NWSL, have to face.

“Growing up, of course I wanted to play professionally,” she said. “But, the lifestyle is hard. It’s a struggle, it’s not like they show in the movies where you get paid easily, it’s hard work. Few make it.”

With the Breakers, Andrews hasn’t scored yet in 17 games in her rookie campaign, and she earned 10 starts before heading back to college.

Despite her accomplishments so far, to achieve the dream she’s had since she was a kid, Andrews has more work to do.

“I’m working daily to make a bid for the national team,” she said. “I want to be a great player and someday be an Olympian and win a gold medal.”
