MILFORD – The showdown between the undefeated Milford High School softball team and one-loss Souhegan on Monday lived up to all expectations.

After two-and-a-half hours of softball, the Spartans kept their perfect season alive with freshman Alice Fortin belting the game-winning RBI single to left in the 11th for a 3-2 triumph at Keyes Field.

Fortin played sensationally well in crunch time as a rookie, posting an exceptional diving catch at short with two down in the eighth and the go-ahead run at third.

“Alice has been our starting right fielder all season but we moved her to short (Monday),” said Spartans coach Jim Rines. “Alice is a tremendous athlete. She can play anywhere on the field and in practice, we play her at every position in the infield except catcher and she can play all three outfield spots. That was a nice timely hit (in the 11th) for the freshman.”

Both starting pitchers went the distance and left it all in the circle, giving their teams every possible opportunity to win. Junior starter Jenna DeAngelis hit her spots well for Milford (8-0) and threw with a great deal of velocity, finishing with nine strikeouts, while giving up nine hits and five walks – one of which was intentional. She retired the side in order during the fourth and 11th, while not allowing a single earned run.

Souhegan (6-2), which made three errors, suffered its second loss of the season to the Spartans, as Milford prevailed, 8-1, on April 10.

Senior starter Cameron Whitney finished with seven strikeouts, while retiring nine straight batters during a period between the first and fourth frames. She allowed 10 hits and walked five – one of which was intentional – and only allowed two earned runs. In six straight innings from the fifth to the 10th, the Spartans stranded at least one runner in scoring position and did not score, as Whitney pitched exceptionally well with runners on base.

After DeAngelis retired the side in order during the top of the 11th, the Spartans went to work with a one-out double down the left-field line by senior catcher Raven Comtois. During the next at-bat, Fortin connected on the game-winning single, allowing Comtois to touch home. Comtois was impressive behind the plate, gunning out Sabers’ runners on attempted steals at second base in the sixth and seventh.

“It is a very exciting win because Souhegan is obviously our rival,” said DeAngelis. “We played great and fought hard through 11 innings. We were getting tired and I know they were, too. We never give up, which is something I love about this team.”

Milford, which made one error, took an early 1-0 lead in the first on a two-out RBI single to left-center by junior Brennan Parker (4 for 5, RBI), scoring Comtois from third, who led off the inning with a walk. Souhegan left the first inning with a positive feeling, as it only gave up one run despite the Spartans putting runners on second and third with no outs. The Sabers were able to turn a double play on a line drive to center and Whitney got out of the frame with a strikeout.

The Sabers fired back with a pair of unearned runs in the top half of the third. Senior Margot Redway crossed home on a error by the second baseman with two down, and then the visitors took their only lead at 2-1 during the next at bat, as freshman Danielle Drobat (2 for 5, double, RBI) drove a one-run single down the left-field line, plating sophomore Ava Van Ballegooyen.

In the bottom of the fourth, Milford did all its damage with two down. DeAngelis helped herself out with a single up the middle, and then courtesy runner Madison Herbert stole second. A one-run double to left by junior Shannon Harbison knotted the game at 2-2.

“The schedule can be unbalanced at times, but when we both square off it gets both teams prepared for the tournament,” said Rines. “Win, lose or draw it is a rivalry and it has been awesome to play them. There was very good fight, determination and passion on both sides and strategy among the coaches. The kids go out and execute and make us look like heroes, but they are the ones that work hard and perform.”

During the course of the game, there were some outstanding defensive plays. In the top of the fifth, Spartans junior center fielder Abby Stillwagon made a great diving catch on a sinking line drive. During the bottom half of the frame, Sabers senior right fielder Caroline Speer raced into foul territory and made a diving snag on a fly ball. Again, in the sixth, Speer made a heads-up play throwing out a batter at first from the outfield on a sharply hit ground ball to end the inning, preventing the go-ahead run from crossing home.

“We got a lot of good teams coming up on our schedule,” said Sabers coach Tony Doucet. “We got Pelham twice, Coe-Brown, John Stark and St. Thomas Aquinas. (Monday) we did not get the result we wanted, but we can hang with anyone the rest of the way.”

Milford will host Oyster River on Wednesday at 4:15 p.m., while Souhegan will welcome St. Thomas Aquinas to Amherst on Thursday with first pitch set for 4 p.m.
