Milford football blanks Sanborn to pick up 6th win

MILFORD - The Sanborn Regional High School football team trekked its way Friday night into Milford in hopes of achieving victory for the first time this season.

The Spartans had other plans, as they rolled to a 49-0 win over the Indians in a Division II South Conference game.

Through six games, the Spartan offense has been electric, averaging a 40 points per game. Led by senior quarterback Gavin Urda, the Milford offense has been difficult to stop for all who have crossed paths with the Spartans (6-1). As for the Indians (0-7), their season has taken a much different path.

Throughout the entire first half, the Spartans dominated on all sides of the ball. On defense, Milford allowed less than 20 yards of total offense in the first half. The Indians were stifled on every attempt they had on offense and never were able to find a rhythm.

The Spartans' defense didn't allow a single first down until late into the fourth quarter, long after their starters had been pulled. The Milford offensive group however was just as explosive as advertised.

In the first quarter, the Spartans were able to make three quick defensive stops, and three straight scoring drives on offense. Milford running back Sean Hanrahan kicked the scoring off with an impressive touchdown run only a few minutes into the game. This score was quickly followed by a 10-yard Urda touchdown run, and a 5-yard Junior Ughu touchdown carry. The Spartans offense was in full motion at this point, but this would be just the start for their unit.

After showing the run for the majority of the game, the Spartans caught the Indians by surprise when they ran a play-action play that saw a receiver deep down field uncovered. Urda was able to easily connect on the pass and watched as his receiver walked into the end zone
untouched. This gave the Spartans a 28-0 lead.

This score seemed to dash out what little hope the Indians had. Milford would ultimately pull their starters after this score and took a 42-0 lead into halftime. Heading into the second half, with the running clock in effect, the Spartans ran out the entire third quarter and drove the ball down to the Sanborn 1-yard line.

On the first play of the fourth quarter, Milford fumbled away the ball which was recovered by the Indians. What seemed to be their first great play of the game, was quickly given back to the Spartans on the next play. A bad snap by the Indians was recovered on the play for the touchdown by Andrew Burns. The lead was bumped to 49-0, and closed out the victory for the Spartans.

Sanborn will go on the road again next Saturday, as it heads to face Gilford-Belmont, while Milford also travels face ConVal on Friday.
