Merrimack's Coffey named New Hampshire's Gatorade Volleyball Player of the Year
Merrimack's Coffey named Gatorade Player of the Year for New Hampshire.
For the second year in a row, the New Hampshire Gatorade Volleyball Player of the Year hails from Merrimack High School.
Jo Coffey, who set the state record for career assists during her senior season with the Tomahawks, was named the state's top girls volleyball player on Tuesday. Her sister, Jen Coffey, received the same award in 2014.
"Jo Coffey shattered the career assist record for New Hampshire setters," Londonderry coach David Starin said. "She was the reason why Merrimack had such a successful season."
The Tomahawks reached the semifinals this season, the third year in a row with Coffey on the varsity that they'd advanced that far. She also helped Merrimack complete an undefeated season as a junior.
Coffey finished the season with 724 assists, 208 digs, 93 kills, 58 aces and 28 blocks and was also named the Division I Player of the Year by the New Hampshire Volleyball Coaches Association. She finished her career with 2,056 assists, breaking the previous mark of 1,671 set by Inter-Lakes Mary McGourty in 2009.
Coffey has maintained a weighted 3.52 GPA in the classroom. A member of the Merrimack High student council, she has volunteered locally at an elementary school, with the Special Olympics and as a youth volleyball coach. She plans to attend Southern New Hampshire University, where she will play volleyball.
