MERRIMACK - There were a few things going on Wednesday that the high school field hockey teams from Merrimack and Nashua North weren't used to.

With both teams taking a hit due to graduation, there were a lot of underclassmen on the field. And with temperatures well into the 90s, the game was divided into 15-minute quarters instead of 30-minute halves.

Those breaks helped each team get its feet wet, but it was Merrimack that came out with a 2-0 win over North in Division I action.

Molly Beacher and Olivia Kapsembelis each had a goal and Seeda Sam-Sok made four saves in her first varsity start in net.

As the game went on, Merrimack coach Ann MacLean tried to keep her players fresh by moving them around the field. Despite some players in new positions, the Tomahawks (1-0) were able to withstand a few late rushes from the Titans (0-1).

"I moved people back there because they were just so tired," MacLean said. "With only three returning players, I'm still looking at different combinations. These freshmen have really stepped up and they're getting a lot of playing time. Because I made so many changes, for them to execute those final 15 minutes was great. They were exhausted. That was great under the circumstances."

North was replacing nine seniors, including its goalie, but got a solid performance from Zoe Fillebrown, who made 16 saves in her first varsity start.

"Zoe was awesome," North coach Kristine Tingley said. "I'm really proud of her. I've been watching her since fifth grade and it's clicked. It's clicked for a lot of them.

"I think it was nice that we got to start with 15 minutes because I think they got to shake their first-game jitters out. I had a lot of kids who didn't play varsity last year. To shake that off and play aggressive, they did get more aggressive in the third and fourth quarter."

Beacher scored with 1:09 left in the first quarter off an assist by Megan King to give Merrimack a lead MacLean felt it really needed.

"That was a big deal because (North) was here to play," she said. "They stepped up and that changed it a little bit when we scored the first goal."

It was still 1-0 at the start of the second half, but Merrimack put a lot of pressure on the Titans' defense early in the half. The Tomahawks looked like they might get a goal off a corner, but a North player knocked the ball away and Merrimack was given a penalty stroke.

Kapsembelis took the stroke and beat Fillebrown with a shot to the right to make it 2-0 with 8:25 left in the third.

North got some chances late in the third and in the fourth, but couldn't capitalize.

Merrimack is back in action Thursday at it heads to Pinkerton for a 4 p.m. start while North is off for a week and will play Salem on Sept. 9.
